Just wondering, but what happened with Orange Nation that affected student attendance?
Before, everyone had a random chance of getting those awesome seats in the first couple of rows behind the bench. Now, one has to pay 40 bucks or whatever to be in the club to even have a shot at being within 8 or 9 rows of the field. In other words, it stratified the student body. Also, certain members of the club seemed to always end up with those coveted first row seats. The system was rigged. Also, the orange nationers tend not to be the rowdy sort to begin with. They don't sneak in the booze, they don't curse and try to fight opposing fans. They smile and put power T decals on their cheeks, and ask you to please not stand on the seats.
My freshman year, I went to every home game. I sat all over the student sections, and had a great time. The crowd was rowdy and edgy. The whole student body is now composed of sober kids with tucked in shirts and khaki shorts.
Our student section was insane in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Orange Nation and the no whiskey thing did not help our sections insanity.
when were students allowed to bring whiskey into Neyland? The fact students can't figure out a way to sneak it in anymore is really proves the "UT is admitting smarter students now" to be wrong.
You don't understand. Those dweebs don't WANT to sneak in liquor. Maybe an avion bottle...
ah I see. Much different than when I was there (mid-late 90's) and the student gate looked like a Jim Beam factory from all the confiscated bottles.
And if you see anyone sneaking in a water bottle to the student section please punch them in the face for me
You've never been through student gates. It's like going through airport security. They'll even kick your boots to see if you have anythingUh what? Me or my dad have never been checked for anything at all, even wearing shorts with like 15 different pockets in the past 5 years, and I haven't noticed a decrease in all of the mini liquor bottles left in the bathroom.

Well, I can tell you that as soon as the Orange Nation got the good block seating it completely ruined the football student section. Half of the fun and rowdiness comes from the seats in front and moves throughout the stadium and when students had a legit shot at getting 4 tickets together for say the Florida, Bama, or Georgia game down low they were excited as hell to be sitting there and would get rowdy. Plus, no remotely cool people were in the Orange Nation because it was basically the dork squad. Also, they have cracked down on sneaking booze into games which is totally gay.
Well stated! The ON thing is a problem and they implemented it in TBA also...so the best student areas are blocked off for them and all other students can only get several rows from the court at best any given game.....What's the incentive?
Plus, half of the student allotment is in the UPPER DECK!!!! The AD decided to sell courtside completely out instead working in more students when they could double the people around the floor and accomodate both! Very poor handling of the students IMO.
First of all, they don't charge for student tickets for the basketball games. I know this for a fact, I am a sophomore at UT.
The student section actually is full for several games, and is extremely active during big games such as Florida, Kentucky, and Memphis. Maybe one reason the students aren't as excited as they were in the past is lack of success? We might have decent teams every year, and maybe make it to the sweet 16, but the students aren't getting excited over this. We always seem to lose big games where the students got into it (at least we did last year), and that makes students not even want to go to less important games.
