I think before Christmas
LSU couldn't get either of the guys they wanted so they had to hire their interim coach. USC hired their interim coach. Georgia hired a coordinator with no head coaching experience. Texas has made two recent hires; first they went with a guy from the AAC, and then when he flopped, they hired another guy from the AAC, this time one who just finished 4th in his division. Florida's two recent hires have been a coordinator and then a guy from the Mountain West.
Those might be the top five jobs in the whole country and not one of them's been able to make a slam dunk hire. This idea that all it takes is a willingness to throw money around is a fantasy.
Lol, your line of thinking drives me insane, if you're of the "best person for the job" variety. If best person for the job requirements discounts a UT connection over a degree from Harvard from an individual who has never been south of the Mason Dixon line, give me the UT connection every time.
Several coaches were interviewed when Kiffin was hired, head coaches at other places. it was true that Hamilton had already settled on Kiffin when interviewing those coaches but he did speak with them
there were 9 or 10 coaches told us no before Dooley was hired. No to even having a conversation not no to an offer. I believe all were head coaches. Was an impossible situation to get people to come ot.
Gundy and Strong said no, Strong after agreeing to take the job. before Jones..
Just speculating, but is it possible that UTK does NOT want to Poach from their sister School UTC?? Just Wondering? :dunno::dunno:
.
Why doesn't UT circle back on a guy like Strong? Obviously Texas was a bust for him, but that had a lot to do with their donors and such. Strong is a SEC guy.... and our defense sux, frankly. And, I know it's too late now, but this is something nobody ever does.

LSU fired Miles at 114 and 34 only to hire a guy that got blow'd out of Ole Miss after three years with a record of 10 and 25 (3 & 21 in conference).
LSU was willing to pay high dollars for a top name coach - they have one of the most talented teams in the SEC (and country) and fertile recruiting grounds but they could not hire a premier coach. Interesting concept isnt it?
In the last ten years, there have been three surefire slam dunk hires in college football that everyone knew would work.
Nick Saban at Alabama in 2007.
Urban Meyer at Ohio State in 2012.
Jim Harbaugh at Michigan in 2015.
Look at those three hires.
1. Alabama first offered Rich Rodriguez (who turned them down while at FREAKING WEST VIRGINIA) and then made Jim Leavitt (!!!) their number one contender before the Dolphins nosedived and Saban wanted out with ownership concerns. If Rich Rod takes the Alabama job or Nick Saban picks Brees over Culpepper they don't get him.
2. Ohio State loses Jim Tressel due to NCAA violations and Urban has to leave Florida after his fake heart attack because his wife found about his affairs with cheerleaders and had to leave for a year.
3. Michigan hires Harbaugh because the GM wins a power struggle and sucks up to the owner so Harbaugh gets fired AND it is alma mater. If Harbaugh doesn't go to Michigan he is still coaching in the NFL.
You don't hire slam dunks. You hire top ten program coordinators or you hire top 25 mid majors coach.
Texas- A coach from Louisville and Houston
Nebraska- A DC from LSU and a 93-80 Pac-12 coach who never won his division or conference
Oregon- Promoted their OC twice, then hired a guy from South Florida with three losing seasons.
USC- Hired a 12-21 career head coach, hired a 34-29 guy from Washington, hired and promoted their OC
LSU- Hired a 21-29 career coach
Florida- Hired Texas' DC with no coaching experience and the head coach from Colorado State who never won his conference
Michigan- Hired the head coach from West Virginia, then hire a guy who spent two years at San Diego State who was 13-12 and 34-38 at Ball State
Notre Dame- Hired a guy from Cincinnati
Big name hires don't happen anymore.
That is just silly. Michigan hired Hoke because he was a "Michigan" guy. Mcelwain had turned around Colorado State in 2 years. Brian Kelly had turned around Cincinnati. Muschamp was the hottest coordinator at the time and was the coach in waiting at Texas. We hire guys with no track record of success at any level and then claim there are no big names.
It seems like we get turned down by the big names, then we deny having offered them and hire relatively unproven people. Then it later comes out that we wouldn't ante up for top talent prices. That is just silly. Michigan hired Hoke because he was a "Michigan" guy. Mcelwain had turned around Colorado State in 2 years. agreed. but even the ones we offered, muschamp comes to mind, he didn't sign with FL a year later for all that much a different price than was offered to him from us? or am i remembering that wrong?

Correct, and that is my point we don't even try. By trying, I mean throw out a good number and make them say no not just make a phone call or not at least make an attempt to counter offer. If they say no after that, then you have done the best you can and you try to figure out what needs to change inside the athletic department. UT doesn't do that, we put a few feelers out then rush to settle on a candidate in a race to salvage recruiting with little thought on actual player development.
Where is all this booster money and donations going? Someone is getting overpaid for having their thumb up their a$$.Correct, and that is my point we don't even try.
