Utah State

the same crew that complains like you, are the same ones that say "if north doesn't get hurt, we beat Vandy or if Peterman doesn't start vs Florida we'd have beaten them."

you are the one making fools of yourselves.

The ONE making fools of YOURSELVES? :)

I ain't reading this whole abortion of a topic but has anybody gone through every game on the schedule and done a "oh no we probably gone get our asses whipped in this game" breakdown?

Back to the OP.

Utah State imo is similar to Cincy '11. They are a good, well-coached mid-major coming into Neyland with hope. UT should beat them in similar fashion.

Not yet I'm working on that as I type..

Hopefully, but this team is nowhere near as talented. Yet. We dont have a Poole, Hunter, Bray, and Rivera along with starting a completely new oline. Defensively it should be pretty close.

The '14 team is at LEAST as talented as the '11 team. Lane is at worst comparable to Poole. He has better back ups on the roster and coming in than Poole had.

UT has at least 3 QB's capable of getting the job done... not just one. North entering his Soph year is similar to Hunter. As a group, there is more talent at WR and TE than '11.

I would choose this rising OL over the one in '11. Most of this year's starters have been developing for 2 or 3 years before having to start. The concern is LT.

I am actually pretty optimistic overall about the direction of the O. I can somewhat buy "system change" as a reason they weren't more successful this past year.

The D... is another story. The talent will be better this year and even deeper though not "deep" by normal standards. Go position by position and compare to the likely starters this fall. Here is the '10 starting line up for game 1:

LE 55 Smith, J. (adv 14)
DT 97 Jackson, Mal. (not a true DT, adv 14)
NT 76 Hood, D. (adv 14)
RE 99 Martin, B. (bad knees, adv 14)
SLB 56 Maggitt, C. (same player, more experience)
MLB 40 Johnson, Aus. (adv 14*)
WLB 45 Johnson, A.J. (faster options, adv 14)
LCB 27 Coleman, J. (same player, more experience)
SS 17 Brewer, B. (adv 14)
FS 23 Waggner, P. (adv 14)
RCB 10 Teague, M. (adv 14)

*The only position I really consider questionable is MLB. I liked Austin Johnson a good bit.

Whether it was his natural position or not Malik Jackson was a pretty darn good DT and we won't line anyone up against Utah State that will be better than him.

You seem to be relying on chickens that have not come home to roost..Yet.

Potentially we will (in the future) be a better team, but when we line up against US we will be inexperienced and talented. It could be awesome or disasterous.

Oh, and Malik was and is still a stud.

Utah State fan here.
I have really mixed feelings about this game. On the one hand, it is really exciting to have a game in Neyland Stadium against a traditional SEC powerhouse like Tennessee. On the other hand, it is a bit intimidating, and no one wants to start a season with a loss. We're realists. We come from a mid-major conference with a pretty lean TV contract. Every year, we schedule a "money game", because frankly, well, we need the money. Our goals for the money game are, in order, 1-get the money. 2-try to avoid any season ending injuries. 3-try not to be embarrassed. We never win the money game. In the last 5 years, our record has been:
2013 USC (L) 14-17
2012 Wisconsin (L) 14-16
2011 Auburn (L) 38-42
2010 Oklahoma (L) 24-31
2009 Texas A&M (L) 49-52
We always dream that one day we'll win the money game, but it never happens.
One of your posters mentioned that mid-majors tend to come into Neyland and be overwhelmed by the experience. Frankly, I am a bit nervous about that. True, our seniors next year will have played in Jordan-Hare Stadium, Camp Randall, and LA Memorial Coliseum, but I'm sure nothing can really prepare a player for Neyland.
Honestly, I don't think your coaching staff should waste much time preparing for our game. Just two weeks later, you'll be playing Oklahoma in Norman. That's a much bigger challenge. The last two years, we may have looked good on paper, but our numbers were padded by playing a really weak schedule, particularly in 2012, when we finished the season 16th in the AP poll. I was shocked by that.
Anyway, thanks in advance for the money, I hope there won't be any injuries, and maybe we can make it a good warm up game for you.

LKGates, me and the other posters on this board will be sure to tell the coaching staff to pay no attention USU for you. If we don't take USU seriously it will be loss for the vols plain and simple. If not for missed field goals against better teams than the vols the last two years for USU the scores you posted would be telling us they are giant killers and people would be hating this game. It being the first game of the year is the biggest advantage ut has going for them. That being said It all rides on Keaton's health both mentally and physically for USU to win

A lot of reverse psychology in this post

I see what you did, and it was good. Make us feel overconfident and then crush us like an empty beer can

This is Utah States best chance to win a money game. Our players are young and we are replacing our entire o line. Unsettled at qb, te, de, kicking.

Yeah this kinda gives it away:

If Chuckie Keeton is healthy this will be a competitive game.

In all seriousness, I'd be thrilled if we won this game. I think we've got a chance at throwing a real scare into you. But there is a reason the P5 conferences are who they are, and we aren't. While I'd like our chances against Colorado, Purdue, Kansas, Virginia, or Kentucky, that isn't you guys. Add in that it's in your house, and you've had a really good recruiting year, and I think we're in our usual situation. I think we'll earn some respect, but probably not a win.

Enjoy the trip. Should be fun regardless. I'd be driving back for this game had I not moved here last summer.

On the one hand, the first one or two early season non conference games are ones UT traditionally does well at, regardless of the final outcome of the season.

On the other hand, UT didn't do too great against South Alabama this year, and I'm honestly surprised they managed to beat Troy in 2012.

I think UT will pull out a win, but I wouldn't get overconfident or this could well turn into an upset. Blowing an early season non conference home game right off the bat would be, IMO, worse even than loosing to Vandy again.

I know this game was scheduled in advance, but this game is a risk with absolutely no reward. I don't mind playing teams like Oklahoma, but teams like these can beat you and you gain nothing from winning.
