For a program trying to gain credibility and respect amongst the blue bloods, most definitely it does. Now, does it mean anything come March? No, but it's a heck of a feather in the cap and a selling point to recruits, and there is a reason we all still talk about that one week back in February 08. It's special and noteworthy, if not all that important to determining the season's fate. It's Jan.! Most teams have 16 games (8 weeks) of regular season left. Does it matter where a team is ranked on 1/14/19?

get used to it this early in the season. the bandwagon voters get to have their fun. as the season goes along, its hard for them to get away with it. if we go into Kentucky 23-1, we're the #1 team in the country no matter what Duke or Michigan or Virginia do. Duke plays Virginia twice. They wont sweep and Virginia is not going to jump us because I know for a fact they are overrated. they will lose 2 games by then. NCST and Duke, Maybe even NC. if we're undefeated in the SEC it's money.
Nobody is arguing any differently that basketball is a tournament sport. Heck, football is too, now. And I admitted that “in the grand scheme of things” it won’t matter to anyone else in my very last statement of the post you quoted. But it will matter to Tennessee fans, players, coaches, and the kids they try to recruit to come here.Because that's all UT has had as a program. Yes, it's nice but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't mean squat. Does anyone remember who was ranked #1 last season in the 2nd week of Jan?
Basketball is a tournament sport and that's all anyone remembers. I would say more people remember Loyola-Chicago making the Final Four than who won the tournament (Villanova).
