I made a web app (built with Python and Dash, hosted on Render) that shows the Vols roster makeup by state for every season going back to 1970. You can scroll through each year and see how the roster changed over time. The map updates and there's a legend that shows the percentage of the roster from each state.

The percentages compare each state to the previous year so you can see which ones are gaining or losing ground. There's an autoplay option too if you want to just sit back and watch it change year by year.

It works on mobile but it looks better on desktop. I'm not a frontend dev or anything and this is just a side project I put together for fun. Let me know what you think.

I should add that I built this using publicly available roster data acquired from utsports.com.
Website might take 20s or so to spin up if you're the first person to look at it in a while.

This is really cool. Thanks for this.

Those Carolina/Virginia numbers need to to increase. Especially North Carolina.

Agreed. I have also observed a few interesting trends. For instance, it seems like there is a concerted effort within the current program to recruit the state of Texas. We are recruiting Texas better than we ever have right now (except maybe the early 90s)

We’ve struggled with Texas in the past. And even when we did land Texas kids, they seemed to get homesick and transfer out. We haven’t had any real stud VFLs from there, off the top of my head. Denarious Moore comes closest and we got him as an afterthought to his high school teammate Lennon Creer, who transferred out.

Maybe adding the two Texas schools to the SEC is helping? Dunno.

I'm a GIS specialist. Nice work! I use ArcMap and PowerPoint to make a gif like this.

you young guys with your internet wed app thingies well done! take bow my VN friend
I appreciate that, friend. Glad you like it.

Could be? It seems like at one point we were doing pretty well there and then we just fell off. That seemed to coincide with our 15 year long downturn though so it’s hard to say why it’s started to pick up again. Texas is a talent rich state though so I’m glad we’re taking advantage.

This is simply amazing. Thank you!

Appreciate that, especially coming from someone in GIS. I’m sure ArcMap could do this way better, I just used Dash since I know Python. Might try your PowerPoint idea for a gif too. Let me know if you’ve got any tips or ideas.

Yep. Seems he had a formula in his head based on needs, Went mid-west and new jersey for linemen. west coast for speed, etc. Atleast that's how my mind wants to remember it.
Judging by the data he definitely seems to have been recruiting more nationally than other coaches though if you look at the map we are definitely concentrating our efforts in a few key areas compared to being spread out. He must have been traveling a lot that’s for sure.

One surprising thing I noticed was recruiting in Florida for us has completely fallen off. It’s been on a downward trend for the past 7 cycles and I wonder if they just decided it was more worth the effort to recruit Georgia more heavily instead.

Well done! This is something I've wondered about for quite a long time, and so I'm glad you made this -- very neat way to present this data!
Glad you like it. Appreciate you taking the time to enjoy it. It was something I’ve been wondering myself for a while as well and I figured since I don’t have much experience building frontend stuff I’d give it a shot.

I may do more stuff like this in the future if people see value in it and it doesn’t stop being fun for me.

This map certainly shows the recruiting prowess of Phil Fulmer. It also shows how recruiting went to $hi# after he left.
It started declining before he left. The 2008 recruiting class was abysmal. Kiffin didn’t inherit a lot of talent from Fulmer (although he should’ve inherited Boyd and Petty if he hadn’t run them off).

Tennessee has had recruiters other than the head coach for decades. The hiring of staff with strong contacts in Georgia has helped recruiting from that talent rich state.

That's pretty dang awesome! Thanks for sharing!

Would be cool to show that classes overall for year record.
