1. Pound the rock, control the Clock.
2. Spread out the passes with mostly high probability passes.
3. TEs will get used a lot more, especially with a better blocking OL that doesn't need TEs to block all the time.
4. Pin them deep with well placed punts
5. Take away the big play from GT.
6. No stupid penalties or unforced turnovers.
7. Don't be too predictable...(running up the middle on 1st down 80% of the time).
It's what I expect too.
I know the GT staff is worried about Ethan Wolf at TE, they feel he could be a mismatch problem. We've always had a problem with TE's and Wolf has the potential to be a good one.
More of a question than a plan. Our special teams really was good at pinning the ball close to the goal on punts and making our opponents play out of the end zone. My question is, how much (if any) is the effectiveness of a triple option diminished playing out of the endzone? Is the triple option better, worse, or a wash compared to a "regular" formation.
Triple option is actually a good scheme for being deep in your own end of the field. It is designed to take yardage in small chunks (3-5 yards at a time) with the occasional breakout play. It is very good at not going backward. Which is exactly what you want near your own goal line.
UT's OL 30-40 lb/man weight advantage over GTs DL will be outcome determinative.
Just for fun, I'd like one time for Butch to run the wishbone v a wishbone team.
GTs 1st team D never practices vs. the bone.
If they put 8 in the box, as App St did, QD will burn them. Dobbs, not so much.
Man, you do not know how strongly I'm hoping that you are right on the money here.
Unfortunately, App State didn't have to flood the box last year to clog up the middle on us. Our very first offensive play from scrimmage is a prime example: App State was in a nickel defense, 5 DBs, only 6 in the box (4 down linemen, 2 LBs). Hurd got the handoff and was met at the line for minimal gain (maybe 1.5 yards).
It was like that much of the first half. I'm really, really hoping our OL is much better this season, and that you're right about us having a big (literal) advantage.
Go Vols!
I also agree but Debord is not calling plays now. IMO Dormady will not have many designed runs but he does have the mobility to make plays outside the pocket with his arm and legs. If we can handle a 5 man rush with the OL and backs I see endless possibilities for our offense this year.
I have my fingers crossed that you are right.
