UT offense game plan for GT?

Like last year, our offense will sputter for the first few games. Defense will be mediocre. I expect a close win or loss for the Vols. We lost too many guys to the NFL last year for us to come out in dominant fashion.

I don't see how GT puts as much talent on the field on defense as they will face against our offensive talent. If we go run heavy, which we likely will, it plays into the strength of their defense as that is what they've been practicing against on their run heavy offense.

I'd be sure and give our QB some early confidence completion throws as well as ensure their LBs & DBs have to roll back into coverage almost every play chasing our receivers all over the place and taking their legs away for the 2nd half. I expect the passing game will be wide open for us the 2nd half if we choose to exercise it. Staying run heavy plays into their game plan as it keeps the clock going and helps their offense. I'd prepare to take advantage of our running game but I'd scheme and be pass heavy the first half for sure. Even incompletions if you get 'em kills the clock and that hurts GT they need that clock running the whole game.

1. Pound the rock, control the Clock.
2. Spread out the passes with mostly high probability passes.
3. TEs will get used a lot more, especially with a better blocking OL that doesn't need TEs to block all the time.
4. Pin them deep with well placed punts
5. Take away the big play from GT.
6. No stupid penalties or unforced turnovers.
7. Don't be too predictable...(running up the middle on 1st down 80% of the time).

It's what I expect too.

I know the GT staff is worried about Ethan Wolf at TE, they feel he could be a mismatch problem. We've always had a problem with TE's and Wolf has the potential to be a good one.

If they are worried about Wolf, I want to see them put up with Latrell Bumphus on other downs. Lolol.

More of a question than a plan. Our special teams really was good at pinning the ball close to the goal on punts and making our opponents play out of the end zone. My question is, how much (if any) is the effectiveness of a triple option diminished playing out of the endzone? Is the triple option better, worse, or a wash compared to a "regular" formation.

Triple option is actually a good scheme for being deep in your own end of the field. It is designed to take yardage in small chunks (3-5 yards at a time) with the occasional breakout play. It is very good at not going backward. Which is exactly what you want near your own goal line.

Thanks, VFL. Was hoping for a rosier response, though!:)

Just for fun, I'd like one time for Butch to run the wishbone v a wishbone team.
GTs 1st team D never practices vs. the bone.

UT's OL 30-40 lb/man weight advantage over GTs DL will be outcome determinative.

Yeah, you'd think so. Didn't help us so much last fall against App State. But fingers crossed we got that figured out this year.

Heh, wonder when Ga Tech last played against a wishbone offense.

If they put 8 in the box, as App St did, QD will burn them. Dobbs, not so much.

Man, you do not know how strongly I'm hoping that you are right on the money here.

Unfortunately, App State didn't have to flood the box last year to clog up the middle on us. Our very first offensive play from scrimmage is a prime example: App State was in a nickel defense, 5 DBs, only 6 in the box (4 down linemen, 2 LBs). Hurd got the handoff and was met at the line for minimal gain (maybe 1.5 yards).

It was like that much of the first half. I'm really, really hoping our OL is much better this season, and that you're right about us having a big (literal) advantage.

Go Vols!

I also agree but Debord is not calling plays now. IMO Dormady will not have many designed runs but he does have the mobility to make plays outside the pocket with his arm and legs. If we can handle a 5 man rush with the OL and backs I see endless possibilities for our offense this year.

""Quinten Dormady can really throw a pretty ball while on the run. The quarterbacks practiced rolling out of the pocket and throwing some intermediate passes while on the run, and Dormady’s throws were on the money, especially on a pass to tight end Ethan Wolf. Jarrett Guarantano isn’t bad on the run either, and he appears faster than Dormady when running. But Dormady’s touch/velocity was on point on his throws."

Taken from Fingers practice report.

I see this heavy in our offense either by design or improvisation.

I think Butch will use the 5 play book. And save the super secret play book for Florida. Just like last year.

Just 4 plays this year we took out the slow hand off to the TB (Hurd) 6 yards behind the line with a 2 yard staggering plunge into the middle of the defense.
