UT Defense 2 Deep - Early View

A few corrections.
1. Gooden was brought in to play NT. If he picks it up quickly look for one of the other NT's to move over to the OL.
2. Kongbo and Phillips will be the starting ends unless someone steps up. Look for Butler and Bennett to be the backups starting out.
3. I think Allen starts ahead of Smith
4. Replace Bates with Peterson
5. Expect to see Gray in the safety rotation

Maybe try Bates at fullback, if we go with some two back sets?

Would love to see someone step up and take Abernathy's spot. Good kid, but lacks speed.

Agree, he was loved by the former staff, curious how Pruitt and co. will grade him. Wasn't he a few steps slow on that hail mary that florida beat us with?

Osborne has been on a milk carton

And it's the half pint variety at a motel 6 continental breakfast.

Barely covers the handful of corn pops in the tiny plastic bowl.

Pruitt will use sub 6 foot corners only as a last resort im afriad.

We have a small roster. Too many slot sized receivers as well.

War Room says Theo Jackson is being moved to corner.

Best dedense in the country!

And the thing about all these early two-deeps is that they are:

1. full of talent
2. so deep everybody forgets somebody good

Been a while since that happened.

And hopefully we’ll have someone to coach them!!

A. Johnson has guard written all over him

maybe. i dunno which one would be most likely to move, but short of signing another ol in the spring, i have to think someone on the DT roster is being looked at for OL.

I'm assuming that Shy and Gooden are the top two NT's, so it looks like it'll be either A Johnson or Crosby with the other being 3rd string at NT. I would guess Johnson simple because Crosby is listed at 6'1". A bit short for an OL.

A senior who has never played the position? Uh, no. This guy was the #1 Juco DE. Someone just needs to get it out of him.

I know I’m nit picking but he was the #2 juco DT, Kongbo was the #1 juco DE. That being said, I’m all for being hopeful with Johnson. He’s got size and his film looked good. Hopefully this new staff can bring out his potential.

kinda crazy i know, looking back. but kongbo was also very raw. i think he got rated so high because...well, i mean look at the dude....he's a physical specimen.

but he had very little experience, and was extremely raw. and he hasn't progressed enough yet to be the kind of difference maker you'd think a #1 rated prospect, at any level, would make.

we'll see how it goes this year, but, i do honestly think this move to a 3-4 DE will actually help him.

I think Petersen could crack the top two of the LB rotation.

What about Ignont at LB? Is he considered a lost cause?

I don't know about Bama but he wouldn't be in 2 deep at UGA, wasn't even recruited other than a token offer, never invited to campus. UGA had Cox, Anderson, Walker and Reese all rated higher instate and Tindall from South Carolina was the top inside guy on UGA's board, Walker is going to play inside too as a frosh, will move outside when Cox outgrows the position and Pappoe arrives in 19. All those guys are backups in 18, other than maybe Cox.

We have a lot of solid defensive players that only need development and a plan to be successful. I have confidence we will be a better team although seven or eight wins seems to be our max next season.

My prediction is that we will have a top 5 SEC defense this year, which will be a massive improvement over one of the worst defenses in TN history vs the run.

Here is my early 2 deep: (without any of this years signing class besides Gooden)

DE Gooden 295/ Butler 285
DT Tuttle 310/ Alexis Johnson 305
DE Kongbo 280/ Phillips 280

OLB Austin Smith 240/ Jordan Allen 240
ILB Bituli 235/ Sapp 230
ILB Kirkland 235/ Bates 230
OLB D.Taylor 250/ Deandre Johnson 255

CB Shamburger/ Buchanan
CB Bird/ Labruzza
Nickel Osboure/ Bailey
S Abernathy/ Todd Kelly
S Warrior/ Theo Jackson

So we should have a legit 3-4 deep with our signing class with legit SEC size and speed. We won't be dominant but we have a chance to be really good IMO...we hv to get bigger at DE, and make big improvements with our DBs. Our LBs will be the strength of the defense
Four worries already Austin Smith, Kirkland, Tuttle, and Bates will any of them see the field this season. We haven't seen much of any of them since they arrived at Tennessee.

This could work just fine ... if our guys (LBs?) know how to do their assignments and make correct reads in a timely manner. Seems like that was a problem the last time we tried this. Here's hoping we kick butt with it.

Kongbo needs to get better, quick. I know many here love him, but to me, he always looked out of position and rarely made any big plays. I think he’d be better inside. He doesn’t appear to have the quickness and athleticism for DE.

Dude I am so with you, I don't know why nobody else sees this....play Phillips over him, or hope he gets trained up a LOT
