I've said for years the mistake with Kiffen was rushing to fill the spot. SHould have promoted one of Kiffins staffers to interim and then had a true search in the fall. But there are 2 differences. 1, Kiffin came in and left after 1 year. Any new coach would have been the 3rd in 3 years and none of the current schools are facing that. 2, the big mistake was looking for a coach 2 weeks before signing day (yes I know signing day has moved up but there are 2 singing periods now). LSU was smart to announce Coach O was gone mid-season, giving them a head start. We could have gone interim for 2010 and if it didn't work out, the finish the season with the interim tag while a new search is occuring. Oh well, coulda woulda shoulda...

White is a much better athletic director than Hamilton ever was...........

Kiffin's buyout in 2009 was a million dollars.

Incorrect. Money talks. Kelly is leaving a team that has the possibility of making the playoff. We are not big spenders.

Kelly knows what the results will be when ND takes the field in the playoffs, he's had enough.

Perhaps. But pointing to some line in the sand as to why we didn’t get a great coach is BS. Write the check and you can get almost anyone on your list.

...were BAFOONS and that's actually insulting those lovable primates.

Seeing these blue bloods make moves like this is very telling. It proves our fanbase was not crazy for wanting the best back when Kiffen bolted for USC.

Who did we get.. Derek frickin Dooley who had a losing record at La. Tech. W.T.A.Frick.

Then we follow that up with 2 equally disastrous hires in Botch and Cornbread. I just pray that we can hold onto JH and he brings us back.

Go VOLS!!!

I mean we had Cutcliffe on the hook but the baboon Mike Hamilton decided strong arm him with Kiffin's leftover coaches that he didn't want to pay buyouts too.

1. They rushed a hire to salvage the #7 class in the country. Okay, not shabby. We'll double back to this.

2. AFAIK most said "no, thanks" because of lowball offers. The UTAD was still in the mindset of "a top-flight coach doesn't cost more than $2mil/year". We tried doing bargain bin shopping and of course they said "no".

3. Pruitt was a fustercluck. No way around that, we agree on.

4. I think he's talking about how LSU dropped a 10-year/100mil contract for Kelly. It proves that you can get a top-shelf hire but you need to shell out the money for it.

5. In hindsight I think the best move would have been appointing Chaney as interim and then going for Gary Patterson at probably $4-4.5mil/year.

Somehow, they had Patterson wanting to come, but went with Kiffin. I was told that about half way through Kiffin being here.

So, had Hammy gotten Patterson? No Kiffin, no sanctions and a few mattresses get spared. No Dooley and WW2 stories. No Jones and the "Individuals", and no Pruitt and the McDonalds bags. By now, Patterson might have had a letdown, but we could have replaced him with Heupel. But in the meantime, Patterson very well could have led Tennessee to be one of the elite teams in the SEC. He might have had some trouble with Saban, and there is no way to definitely prove how well he would have done here. But I think it is safe to say we would have been a bigger thorn in our rival's side with gary Patterson, judging upon his success at TCU.

I do agree we had poor leadership back then, but I will also say that the timing of it all was difficult. We ended up having to find a new coach I feel like right before national signing day in January. We were in a mad scramble to salvage a class.
Our leadership hasn’t improved very much since then.

Are you (and others) so dense that you couldn't tell I was intentionally misspelling Kiffin's name? It's folks like you and a handful of others in this thread that legitimize other fan bases claims of incestual breeding amongst our Vol faithful.
You bafoon you.

The first mistake was made before (Kiffan,Kiffen, Kiffin) was hired in November of 2008. Mike Hamilton could have had Brian Kelly of Cincinnati, at the time. Kelly had expressed interest in the UT opening through his agent. Hamilton had a Kiffin fixation, however. He bought into Kiffin's sales pitch of assembling an all star staff of recruiters, with his dad coaching the defense. Wanna kick in the head? Kelly and his staff would have been cheaper too.

I suppose you misspelled "buffoon" intentionally as well? Let's be careful about calling other people 'dense'.

I think Cutcliffe was not going to be our coach because of his health and the stress. He was headed to Notre Dame as coordinator when he had his heart attack. I met him few years back and while he loves UT it was too much pressure at the time. His wife was against it as well. He is a great man and very genuine person.

I heard the President of Alabama asked how he could justify paying a football coach $9 million a year and said said " that's easy, since Nick Saban has been our coach our donations and revenues are up over $100 million a year!"
Now, if we spent a few more bucks after Kiffins left instead of the cheap route, our revenues could have paid the difference and more! The last 15 year has cost the University a ton in lost revenue and donations I'm sure.

Why can't we let this kiffin crap go. He has been gone for like 10 or 11 years now. Who cares about that idiot.
