US Soldier Bowe Berghdahl freed from Taliban in prisoner exchange

What do you suggest we do than to turn back this coming doom? Another Final Solution? Unlike most, I don't live my life in fear.

You don't have to be living in fear to stay aware of world events. You obviously don't keep up with what's happening in Europe or even in the midwest here in the states. You just keep your head buried in the sand (or elsewhere) and hope that nothing bad happens in your lifetime and your kids and grandkids are on their own to combat the coming invasion.

The majority of American people will believe any lie that they think will make their life easier and the sitting president is absolute proof of that.

Many Americans are cowards, unwilling to face facts. I was traveling to London just after the first gulf war started and was one of 15 people in coach (designed to carry about 250). I had to go to Amsterdam a couple of weeks after the war ended and it felt like they were getting us on the plane using shoe horns.

So don't live in fear and by all means don't stay aware of what is happening in the world around you. Just stay happy and stupid until it's too late to do anything.

Given all the angles and issues, I think reasonable people would want to understand the facts a lot better before conclusively judging the decision.

So that leaves you out.

What angles am I missing other than pure political ones?

They released 5 hardcore terrorists for 1 soldier who deserted in a war zone. He left his post when he was supposed to be on watch, endangering his buddies!

Are you American?

I ask because you have concluded that he deserted without hearing a word from him on the subject.

I have not yet seen anyone from Congress say that the administration's claim that they had been briefing members for some time is untrue. Did someone say that and I missed it?

I posted it

Asked why Congress wasn’t informed, Rice first said that members had been briefed many times on the subject of negotiating with the Taliban. Asked about this assertion, Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said that there had been discussions about whether to engage the Taliban -- but not about swapping Bergdahl for prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay.

I have not yet seen anyone from Congress say that the administration's claim that they had been briefing members for some time is untrue. Did someone say that and I missed it?

Republicans in Congress criticized the agreement and complained about not having been consulted, citing a law that requires that Congress be notified 30 days before a prisoner is released from Guantanamo. Republicans on the House Armed Services Committee said the Pentagon notified the panel by phone on Saturday that the exchange was occurring in the next five hours.

Obama suggested Tuesday that lawmakers were aware of the prospect that the U.S. could agree to a prisoner swap with the Taliban. And he defended his administration's handling of the formal notifications, saying that when the opportunity to free Bergdahl presented itself, "We seized that opportunity."

Officials said delaying Bergdahl's transfer in order to comply with the congressional notification rules would have interfered with two of the president's constitutional authorities: protecting the lives of Americans abroad and protecting U.S. soldiers.

Being briefed on the possibility and actual notification required by law are two entirely different things. Heck Obama admits he didn't comply with the law!

Yes and a Vet.

Hearing from him? I think we have heard enough from his platoon mates to know he wasn't captured.

You are correct that briefing them is not the same as the formal 30 days' notice. Good for you.

Talk about qualifiers - so what exactly was the briefing. Head of Armed Service Committee say otherwise.

Obama suggested Tuesday that lawmakers were aware of the prospect that the U.S. could agree to a prisoner swap with the Taliban.

Briefing them that the administration was considering negotiations with the Taliban is not the same as briefing them that they were considering trading Bergdahl for these 5 guys or any 5 guys from Gitmo.

So you agree this Administration knowingly violated the law?

They knew they weren't in compliance but felt they had leeway to ignore.

I don't have a problem with this legally as much as I have a problem with them making all the other claims they've made about the deal and why they did it.

Ironic too that Obama had such a hissy fit about W doing this stuff but now is loving his power.

I read they told Congress specifically about these five as the trade.

If the SOB would just own his decisions I could at least respect it. POTUS cannot be an easy job but this guy squirms, twists and deflects at every turn. Make a decision and own it, good or bad!

I imagine their source for that number is Nate. Nate provides the names, as well. But, a few of those guys were killed due to ramped up patrolling for elections, two were killed because they were on patrols that were not priority resourced. However, to claim those patrols would have been prioritized and resourced if not for the search for Bowe is mere speculation. Plenty of patrols in theater are not resourced.

I would assume you have an inner track on something the rest of us are missing?
