US Soldier Bowe Berghdahl freed from Taliban in prisoner exchange

The people in the chain of command who evaluated the situation, the proposal to end it, and how to implement it. I'm sure this wasn't some ad hoc decision by Obama and a handful of people. I'm sure it was studied from a lot of angles. Their collective judgment might be wrong. For a lot of reasons. But I think impugning their motives is partisanship at its ugliest.

Credit for the good.
Not involved whatsoever with the bad.

Got it.

There's a reason they didn't go through the steps required by law. They can study all they want but they did not follow the laws in place for a reason. Dismissing partisanship as a reason for this is premature and ignores 5yrs of evidence

Yes. The reason is they had to act NOW. Not 30 days from now.

The fact that you don't know what the motives actually are simply makes your post partisan drivel.

So you don't think these negotiations have been going on for a while? The fact is both sides of the aisle rejected this before and he didn't like it so as usual he goes around them. He really thinks he is king. If the Rs had any balls they would begin the impeachment process.

The President may be ending the war in Afghanistan but the Taliban is not going to do that. It's just wishful thinking on Obama's part that the war is winding down....he's a fool & always has been a tool.

Not and never was going to happen. Obama has had free reign to do almost whatever he pleases.

No way would any congress would impeach the first AA POTUS. He has know this from the start.

Huh? I'm saying their judgment might be bad on this one. The negotiate with terrorists issue is a legitimate criticism of this. The questions about his desertion are I think difficult to deal with. I'm not sure what role they did or should play in this.

So they may have made a huge mistake.

I'm just saying I don't see any reason to think they didn't make what they thought was the best decision at the time. I don't get why it is so imperative for you to smirk about every single thing this president does, like you have some kind of inside knowledge.

Question the decision? Sure. I'm torn on it, myself. I think everyone is.

It has been widely reported that members of Congress have been told for a long time that this was on the table, and even that Congress was told the names of the five Taliban who would be traded. I've not heard any member of Congress say that isn't true.

I'm smirking at the spun story by the Whitehouse that is already falling apart. Each time they don't tell it straight up I think it's legitimate to question the motives. Why can't they just tell the truth? (see for example)

As a side note, I remember that defenders of Hillary were saying her being resistant to labeling Boko Haram as a terrorist group was smart because such a label would be positive PR for BH. If that's the case then we just gave the Taliban the mother of all PR fodder.

Here's one

Asked why Congress wasn’t informed, Rice first said that members had been briefed many times on the subject of negotiating with the Taliban. Asked about this assertion, Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said that there had been discussions about whether to engage the Taliban -- but not about swapping Bergdahl for prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay.

What is the "spun story" (links please, not your recharacterization) and how is it falling apart?

Not sure what the point of Congress is with this admin.

1. We had to move now because his health was deteriorating and there was no time for a 30 day notice (Hagel)

2. He served with honor and distinction (Rice)

3. Congress knew about this (knew about what? Both Rice and Obama "suggest" Congress knew this was a possibility)

You can look all these up.

How many passes for "huge mistakes" does this administration get?

He has a backlog of things to look up. Just ask Obsessed and Grand.

Given all the angles and issues, I think reasonable people would want to understand the facts a lot better before conclusively judging the decision.

So that leaves you out.

You didn't think! This is what you were fed and choose to believe. As normal.

I have not yet seen anyone from Congress say that the administration's claim that they had been briefing members for some time is untrue. Did someone say that and I missed it?
