Updated Conference/Playoff Discussion (long)

I'm not the guy when it comes to the NIT. I only start watching March Madness (except for UT games, usually) around the Sweet Sixteen. March is too beautiful usually to watch ball all day.

I just trust ESPN to look for more and more games to televise that make money. They'll play up this "someone good gets left out of the CFP" discussion as much as possible to try to justify 16 teams ASAP. It's good business for them.

I think the G5 or NCAA or the money is stopping a "one step down" football tournament. Which one(s) would only be a guess for me but my guess is: money, NCAA, G5 in that order.

Admitting you're not worthy of the top tier tourney would be hard for the G5, I think, but money makes things hurt less.

The NCAA wants to avoid as long as possible the split of the high revenue programs from the low revenue programs which 2 tournaments implies. The NCAA will probably be abandoned by the high revenue programs in favor of some kind of new organization which will cripple the revenue the NCAA makes.

ESPN simply won't do a lower level tournament if it's not going to draw enough ads. That kind of market analysis should be their bread and butter. If it were very profitable, they'd push hard for it.
Makes sense. Great conversation. I enjoyed your perspective on it. In the end, I think the hard ranking is the way to go with no additional qualifiers. That ranking can be based on SoS, SoR, etc. Just not sure how else they do it for it to be "fair". I like the 16 team playoff cause more games but we'll still have these arguments over who gets left out, it will just be further down at large bids.

Yes, thanks for the conversation and appreciate your work. A good friend was an LEO Chaplain and it was a very very emotionally challenging job.

Looking at the results of these conference championship games, how do you make sense of it? SEC is a blowout, just like BigXII. No change in rankings for the SEC teams—no penalty for losing and no reward for winning. But the BigXII loser is out after a blowout. Duke was never going to be in, but the committee dropped UVA for losing in OT—even while not dropping Bama for a blowout. I don’t get it.

I'm honored everyday I get to do it and every call I get called out to. I am blessed to work with LEOs, fire, EMS, and veterans. Is your friend retired now?
He passed just before COVID shut things down in early 2020. It was a perfect ministry for him because he could withstand the horror stories and the mix of emotions via intense faith.

A good man who once said "it's like feet washing but the feet are bloody." I'm sure you get it.

My condolences and respect to the man that went before us. Blessings to your and his family.

I would probably add some other bodily fluids in with the blood, but yes, great description.
