Update on Randy Shannon, DC

We kinda talked about this too. It was his thought that Hart would rather come in full throttle with a splash hire, pulling out all stops, in order to save the foundation that has been put down the last two years by Dooley instead of just putting a band-aid on it like Hamilton had a history of doing, and then having to start all over again next year if Dooley couldn't produce. More of a business decision to pay a bit more now to avoid paying much more at a later date (and not just money--he's very concerned about scraping what is a good foundation).

which is exactly what CDD was saying yesterday in his press conference concerning the solid foundation the program has right now...just had to say that for all those VN guys who hate CDD...it seems CDD and Hart ARE on the same page!

It is right to be skeptical of everything you read on VN. However, DocVol seems to be a reputable poster.

Still, being skeptical is warranted.

Would imagine there he will have protections similar to Grahams...with a much larger $$$ amount...all speculative of course.

This is the kind of contract you don't announce until it is done...if it is in the works at all.

I suppose I went a little too presumptive with my post. I would imagine whomever the DC is, whether Shannon or Steele or ______, they would have protections in the contract should the staff and/or HC be let go after next season--which btw is tentative at best at this point.

Even if Dooley is as bad a coach as many think, he should still win 7 games with this team. However, I don't think he's nearly as bad as those fans do so I expect 8 wins minimum.

First of all, with all the defections of late, on the staff, Dooley's status is still very questionable. I have been hoping that the RS rumors might be true as well. But at this stage, it's just as much pie in the sky speculation as my post regarding Lovie.

Secondly, Carroll showed that an NFL coach can indeed succeed greatly on the college level. In fact, it was his resume as a HC in the NFL that made USC suddenly so attractive to recruits.

USC was in the same shape as we are in now, when they hired Carroll. Lovie has coached here before, so he has ties and a history with us. And he has had a lot of success as a HC with the Bears. Super Bowl and multiple playoff appearances, including the NFC Championship last year. You are telling me that HS recruits would jump at the chance to play for him?

I think if you check Pete Carroll's resume as a HC in the NFL you will find he was a continual loser--just like his current performance at Seattle and he will be out of a job in 2014!

Lovie has show way more competence (got his team to the Super Bowl) in the NFL than Carroll EVER did...and the only reason the Bears collapsed is because of Cutler's broken thumb...

so, your mother's second cousin...??

Reasonable on all counts, IMO.

To welcome the Missouri Tigers into the SEC East, 'SHOW ME"! These rumors are a joke and it is causing a lot of trouble. This guy says this, this guy says that... AS FAR AS THE RUMOR MILL GOES... SHOW ME!

Wait, so you need to see a press conference before believing it? I suggest canceling your VN subscription if you find supposition that distasteful.

You come to an internet message board to demand that people prove what they are saying immediately? You clearly have a wrong impression of what goes on here. This is a place for (1) discussion; (2) vetting of rumors; and (3) test balooning information that isn't ready to be officially released yet. Most all of this is done in pursuit of entertainment. You should probably adjust your expectations. Hope this helps!

I came into some information from a good friend of mine who is one of the bigger UT boosters. This is what he told me earlier this evening at dinner regarding the DC situation:

This happens all the time...I can see this happening and when something is going on I can call a booster or someone close to the program to get information...As we all are UT Fans, it would be the first topic of discussion at the dinner table and if wives were there you would tell them to troll the bar....

-Dooley has known for a better part of a year that JW would leave for the first PAC-12 job that came available. It was always expected that Simon would follow. However, this all started to become reality two days after Christmas when Washington started showing interested and contacted the UT AD about JW.

Again, why not... Probably the number one reason he turned down the Texas position, if offered....His defenses also fits better against the PAC 12 teams versus the SEC...You never know what you are going to see week to week in the SEC.

-Since then, Dooley (and Hart) have worked to compile a list of replacement DC candidates. Sirmon's spot will be left vacant for the time being to accommodate additional staff the new DC may want to bring in, with Dooley's approval.

Based on what was stated by Dooley yesterday, why would they not start looking or have a thought process....Dooley and Hart both felt that Wilcox and Sirmon's departure was an opportunity to excel....They are on the same sheet of music and Hart has got Dooley's back in support....Dooley has not made a bad hire yet...

-Steele was definitely Dooley's first choice, but Hart didn't feel it was a good fit nor the big time hire that was needed. As he explained it to me, Hart did not want a band-aid just to get through next season, which is how it was described that Steele would be.

This is true...but we are in a wait and see mode...Hart maybe right about the fit or the big time hire at this time...He supports Dooley but Hart also has the responsibility to ensure that the whole AD and programs stay on agenda...The band-aid days left with Hamilton and Hart is not a band-aid type...

-Shannon was a close second and Hart's number 1 choice. Hart made it clear to Dooley that funds would be available to secure him, as it would take "a considerable salary," for the Shannon hire.

Ex HC and good coach...Great DC and recruiter. Good motivator...Can tackle the SEC Offenses and is a hard worker...Still has something to prove...It is going to cost a dollar or two...He is worth it...Hart knows and knew this.

-JW informed Dooley on New Years Eve that he would be taking the UW job. Sirmon followed suit the next day. Both were accommodating and offered any assistance to help with the search/transition for the next few days. He's not sure if they were utilized or what they provided but said they were very gracious and accommodating.

Very Cordial why would it have not been....I think Dooley is tired of the Drama created in part by the Media and the fans....It is not that volatile of a situation....January is a tough month on coaches because of the dynamics of the buisness....

-Baring any unforeseen event, Randy Shannon will be the new DC. He and the university have agreed (in principal--not official) through their lawyers to a multi year deal worth over $1million/year plus incentives. Despite Hart's comments on multi year deals, he is treating each coach on a coach by coach basis. Since Shannon is "his guy," it is assumed that there is some leeway on his original comments about multi year contracts for NEW hires.

Lawyers and agents will screw anything up...More hours equals more money in their pockets...They will jam this up to no end to create drama and to achieve a bigger paycheck for themselves and their clients...

This is an unusual hire because some think that Dooley maybe gone before his contract is up...Maybe so, Maybe Not...depends on who you talk to at the moment...

-Expect an announcement by "late Friday or early Monday," depending on contract finalization.

I would hope it would be before the weekend...It throws the potential of some unusual twists in recruiting for the better....Recruitting is about momentum and buzz right up until NSD....

-He was not sure if Shannon was on campus today, as was rumored.

-There was no team meeting as far as he could tell and so the Palardy tweet, he assumes, comes from Palardy's family being connected to a few high ranking names at the university. There was never an announcement made to the team that caused Palardy tweet what he did. He obtained the information from other means, but still accurate.

This is a reasonable explanation with the caveat that young kids don't always hear everything but just what they want to hear....It maybe the case, it may not be I don't know Palardy but based on his field performance this year everybody is capable of making mistakes...Emotions are high right now....knowledge is power when used correctly....

That's the latest and greatest. Should be all but a done deal.

Wouldn't this be great if true...A poster that didn't guess but got it right because a friend shared information with him that was in the know....

Bottom Line: We are going to hire a better DC than we had and He is going to be a SEC Caliber DC....

Shannon is quality a rare commodity that is available...No ties at the moment, a good fit and is capable of getting the job done.....A good role model and understands College kids....

Regardless, We are going to hire a good DC....based on the OP's information, there is a high probability it will be Shannon...

.....

Not if we go 5-7 again

Right now is not the time to dicuss if he is or isn't going to be because the above has not happened....Focus is on the problem at hand....

I seem to think regardless of the record...He gets his full contract as agreed upon.....

He has done what the University hired him to do...and will continue to do so.....on their timeline....not anybody else's....

We need to focus on the DC hire because we know it will definitely affect the win/loss record...

I have to asked this as I question your saying it as it is fact. How is it you know that all Tenenssee hired CDD to do was stand in at head coach for the duration of his contract recruit at a middle tier SEC level and lose football games? THAT is what he has done so far. You actually feel he will be here for his whole contract no matter what the team does on the field? You actually think Tennessee is alright with losing?

Dooley's recruiting has been great since he has been here. With the seasons we have had you cant be anything but impressed with his recruiting. To say otherwise shows your stupidity.

The last thing Hart wants to do is fire Dooley and do the whole job search thing. He is determined to make this work.

Determined to make it work but he picked his own guy. IDK what that says about confidence in a HC if the AD will not let him pick his own guy. Of course maybe Dooley had Shannon on his short list and they reached a consensus?
