Update on Randy Shannon, DC

Anyone think there will be some verbage in his contract that states what sort of compensation or arrangements would be made for Shannon if Dooley's not there next year....?

Crazy not to. Might be a few snags....either way, I'm happy how things are progressing.

If Dooley is fired and Shannon is the DC, Shannon would no doubt at least be named interim coach. Dooley has to see this too and is probably a little leery of hiring his replacement.

Here's my take:
Dooley has a decent foundation and if a GREAT DC can be had, Hart is correct in trying to build on that.
So far Hart seems to be UT's best hire in a while.

DocVol, like I told stopit28 its best to just start keeping your info to yourself. I also had some info and shared it. The first thing that happens (just like in your case) everyone thinks your lying. So, just keep the info to yourself that's what I have decided to start doing.

RS is a great DC, Headcoach not so much. No way Hart would hire RS as HC. I can see Hart going after a bigger, more successful name. Jmo

DocVol, is your contact associated with TeamHealth/ECC? It is my understanding that he's not very enamored with Dooley.

Very few posters have attached Doc. In fact it has been just the opposite. It is all in the delivery!

Doc doesn't say **** to bring attention to himself...and he doesn't have sheep that follow him around and Baa after every post. Tremendous difference.

Doc has come forward with info before that was reliable

You so far have not. If you are true about this, then you will gain some credibilty

Blame Aesop!

I agree...It is now the determination as to which coach will put us into the position to reach for the bigger fish down the road if the Shannon as DC fails....Shannon will add more stability, upgraded recruitting, a SEC defense, motivation, and will compliment discipline and procedures...He is the upgrade needed and will also gain from this if it does not work out...This timing is perfect for him to come here....There is also a bigger buzz with players....Wilcox seemed a little to low key for UT....

I dont buy the having to wait til the contracts are signed bit. Coaches take jobs and are working with thier new teams before the contracts are signed all the time. It may be some other timing issue, and Im not discounting the OP, he even said they had agreed "in principal" which is usually all it takes to get an announcement.

SIAP, but the best justification I could think of to wait until the ink is dry is this plausible scenario:

1. UT and RS agree in principal to a deal.
2. UT announces the potential deal to shore up recruiting class.
3. UT's recruits and fanbase get excited and start feeling very positive about the program.
4. RS is suddenly put into the position of power in the salary negotiation, because he could deflate all that positive momentum and good will by threatening to walk away from the proposed deal at a time when he knows UT's fans, players and recruiting class are at an emotional tipping point.

So... it seems to me that it would be in UTK's best interest to keep this a rumor until the ink is dry. It's better for our contract negotiation if RS thinks of himself as a disgraced head coach who will be lucky to get this kind of opportunity so soon.

Why waste your time talking about a new Head Coach? Dooley will be our coach for a few more years, say 6-10.

I don't think this is the case at all. A good manager should look for subordinates strong enough to take their place, one of CPF's faults is not doing this.

As the HC DD would be the one to reap the rewards for the success of his assistants.

I think landing RS as a DC is on the same scale as landing one of the top head coaches. The clout RS brings to the program is huge, and it should pay off immediately. I dont believe the SEC pressure will run this guy off...

I came into some information from a good friend of mine who is one of the bigger UT boosters. This is what he told me earlier this evening at dinner regarding the DC situation:

-Dooley has known for a better part of a year that JW would leave for the first PAC-12 job that came available. It was always expected that Simon would follow. However, this all started to become reality two days after Christmas when Washington started showing interested and contacted the UT AD about JW.

-Since then, Dooley (and Hart) have worked to compile a list of replacement DC candidates. Sirmon's spot will be left vacant for the time being to accommodate additional staff the new DC may want to bring in, with Dooley's approval.

-Steele was definitely Dooley's first choice, but Hart didn't feel it was a good fit nor the big time hire that was needed. As he explained it to me, Hart did not want a band-aid just to get through next season, which is how it was described that Steele would be.

-Shannon was a close second and Hart's number 1 choice. Hart made it clear to Dooley that funds would be available to secure him, as it would take "a considerable salary," for the Shannon hire.

-JW informed Dooley on New Years Eve that he would be taking the UW job. Sirmon followed suit the next day. Both were accommodating and offered any assistance to help with the search/transition for the next few days. He's not sure if they were utilized or what they provided but said they were very gracious and accommodating.

-Baring any unforeseen event, Randy Shannon will be the new DC. He and the university have agreed (in principal--not official) through their lawyers to a multi year deal worth over $1million/year plus incentives. Despite Hart's comments on multi year deals, he is treating each coach on a coach by coach basis. Since Shannon is "his guy," it is assumed that there is some leeway on his original comments about multi year contracts for NEW hires.

-Expect an announcement by "late Friday or early Monday," depending on contract finalization.

-He was not sure if Shannon was on campus today, as was rumored.

-There was no team meeting as far as he could tell and so the Palardy tweet, he assumes, comes from Palardy's family being connected to a few high ranking names at the university. There was never an announcement made to the team that caused Palardy tweet what he did. He obtained the information from other means, but still accurate.

That's the latest and greatest. Should be all but a done deal.

IF this is true, it seems that the "stopit28" character who appeared and quickly disappeared may have been legit...

Wilcox seemed a little outmatched for the SEC and better suited for the Big 12 or the PAC-12--where defense is optional...

I heard that from a reliable alumni that Deon Grant is retiring after this year and will be the secondary coach next year.

Yeah I don't think he would get the job on a permanent basis but should it happen in the middle of the season then RS would be the one person the staff that has been the HC before. Another poster may be right and DD isn't as paranoid as PF was.
