Update on Randy Shannon, DC

I may have missed it but what is his defensive philosophy?

Someone said he was more of a base 4-3 guy that didn't bring pressure by blitzing a lot. He relies on the front 4 to control games. I don't know how accurate that is but it was said on here by a Cane fan I believe.

I dont buy the having to wait til the contracts are signed bit. Coaches take jobs and are working with thier new teams before the contracts are signed all the time. It may be some other timing issue, and Im not discounting the OP, he even said they had agreed "in principal" which is usually all it takes to get an announcement.

First of all, with all the defections of late, on the staff, Dooley's status is still very questionable. I have been hoping that the RS rumors might be true as well. But at this stage, it's just as much pie in the sky speculation as my post regarding Lovie.

Secondly, Carroll showed that an NFL coach can indeed succeed greatly on the college level. In fact, it was his resume as a HC in the NFL that made USC suddenly so attractive to recruits.

USC was in the same shape as we are in now, when they hired Carroll. Lovie has coached here before, so he has ties and a history with us. And he has had a lot of success as a HC with the Bears. Super Bowl and multiple playoff appearances, including the NFC Championship last year. You are telling me that HS recruits would jump at the chance to play for him?

Pete Carroll was under 500 in the NFL before he went to USC, with his 8-8 record this year he remains that way. Sorry but I don't think of Pete Carroll as a NFL coach. So your point is moot.

Depends on the coach and the situation, but I understand your point. The scenario you mentioned happens much more frequently in head coaching situations. Shannon has much more leverage than most.

Just messin with ya

Like Bruin said, he's a 4-3 guy. LB blitz. Man to man with a little zone thrown in. No 3rd and Chavis

That's what I figured. I hadn't heard he was some new-age DC with some exotic scheme so I assumed he was more base-oriented.

Yeah, I editted my post to clarify my point, but I agree. RS is in the drivers seat. His name is the one we have heard the most with almost every DC opening and hes been very selective.

If Shannon comes here, all the doomsday end of the Dooley era stuff will be in his contract. No way he comes without some insurance it isn't just a one year deal. The sticky part to me is.... Would he be happy as DC while there is no head coach or is Shannon Hart's backup plan the whole time? If they ink Randy all this will already be discussed.

Shannon fits UT's situation pretty well though.

1. Shannon would increase the likelihood of success, which would get Dooley off the hot seat,

2. If Dooley's position worsened, then Shannon's resume is already proven. A year or two at UT would probably help his stock regardless of the outcome. If things went badly, Dooley would take the blame. If things went well, Shannon could look like a savior. Could be a win/win for Shannon.

There is no solid evidence to know if OP is credible, but I still like hearing and hope it is true. I could see this happening.

THis could be a great hire if true. I haven't followed his carreer much but he seems to be a good person and good defensive coach. He should have some good recruiting contacts in south Florida as well.

Awesome news if true.

Also, how scared ****less is Dooley right now after seeing the ease/eagerness that Hart displayed in putting out huge money to bring in a DC like Shannon?

That's some Godfather-esque tactics. I mean, it helps Dooley a lot for sure, but it's also gotta be intimidating as hell seeing first hand how short his leash really is.

I don't see how/why this would be intimidating for Dooley, they are simply replacing a coach that left.

Very skeptical about this "story". Big booster just sitting down at dinner going over all the in's and out's of Hart's business? Big boosters are usually very successful business men and no how to keep their mouth's shut. I'll believe it when I see it.

Quite the opposite. From my experience, bigger donors seem to like to talk about what they are passionate about (and where they spend their money, make investments, etc...). Im this case it's UT football. Im just relaying the information and wouldn't post if I didn't think he was serious. He's been a friend for many years--so for that reason I believe him and not because he is big donor.

Doc wouldn't post for kicks...but your approach is a very wise one. It ain't done till it is signed on the dotted line.

I got the same story on Tuesday afternoon from another big donor... I also agree with your characterization of very big donors... they like to tell you how successful they are and what they know that you don't some because they are cocky and some just to be the guy that said it first. My connection is a good guy but loves to pass along info that he has gathered based on the size of his wallet. The story I got was not as detailed but hit on all the same points you mentioned in the original post. It could all fall apart but in the negotiations but DocVol is spot on with his info.
