My thought as well. Didn't seem like interacting with the fans violates the spirit of that rule. Guess I don't really know the rule either.

That rule seems to mean whatever the zebras want it to mean.

Called because he was in end zone and not out of bounds, maybe?

My god we lose the way we did and you wanna talk about this

Don't think you're understanding his point. He wasn't being critical of Kelly, he wasn't saying he doesn't understand why that was a penalty...I don't either.

Dunno. I would've understood if he'd have taunted an actual player....but doing the gator chomp to the fans with no gator player around? Seems like a bad application of the rule.

I'm pretty sure it's in the rules that you cannot imitate the other team's celebrations. The Gator chomp is clearly directed at taunting other team. Easy call.

Agree. But, it was the only thing I could think of that made sense.

We can debate all day long whether it should be or not be a penalty.

But, enough (and i saw this in the other "unsportsmanlike conduct" thread) with the "clapping" BS.

He was doing the Gator chomp.

What I will say is this is the kind of crap that Florida and Tennessee teams do and Alabama teams don't do.

He wasn't doing it to the crowd?

I agree, it was the gator chomp, so our team is not allowed to do it?

Yes Bama does! Last year, when scarborough scored on us, he did a talk to the hand gesture to our fans...no flag, and they was up BIG.

He gatorchomped 3x right into their student section. It's a penalty, he will run for doing it and he will learn to never do that again.

Sadly that's the rule, but it is the rule and he knew better than to do it. That's why CBJ didn't yell at the ref over it, he ripped Kelly a new one

It's a judgement call.

Well guys, here's the rule:

a. Specifically prohibited acts and conduct include:
1. No player, substitute, coach or other person subject to the rules shall
use abusive, threatening or obscene language or gestures, or engage in
such acts that provoke ill will or are demeaning to an opponent, to
game officials or to the image of the game, including but not limited
to:
(a) Pointing the finger(s), hand(s), arm(s) or ball at an opponent,
or imitating the slashing of the throat.
(b) Taunting, baiting or ridiculing an opponent verbally.
(c) Inciting an opponent or spectators in any other way, such as
simulating the firing of a weapon or placing a hand by the ear
to request recognition.
(d) Any delayed, excessive, prolonged or choreographed act by
which a player (or players) attempts to focus attention upon
himself (or themselves).
(e) An unopposed ball carrier obviously altering stride as he
approaches the opponent’s goal line or diving into the end
zone.
(f ) A player removing his helmet after the ball is dead and before
he is in the team area (Exceptions: Team, media or injury
timeouts; equipment adjustment; through play; between
periods; and during a measurement for a first down).
(g) Punching one’s own chest or crossing one’s arms in front of the
chest while standing over a prone player.
(h) Going into the stands to interact with spectators, or bowing at
the waist after a good play.
(i) Intentionally removing the helmet while the ball is alive.
(j) Dead-ball contact fouls such as pushing, shoving, striking, etc.
that occur clearly after the ball is dead and that are not part of the
game action. (A.R. 9-2-1-X)
(k) After the ball is dead, using forcible contact to push or pull an
opponent off the pile. (A.R. 9-2-1-XI)
