Yup. A big one when factoring state taxes and cost If living adjustment. F the MLB
Come On, you can’t see the appeal of having the opportunity to manage in one of the most beautiful ballparks in America?

I’m not a Giants fan, but even I get chills knowing this is gonna be Vitello’s house and I have a feeling he is gonna bring that same energy and enthusiasm to the MLB he brought to college ball and it’s gonna be contagious.

Have a feeling we will all be invested next season except for maybe our resident Dodgers fan @knoxvol52

I see it a lot, but I don’t understand how people change teams. I bleed orange, but I’m not bailing on the Braves. Certainly not for a coach.

The same way so many became Colts/Broncos fans when Manning played.
Manning was drafted before the Titans even had a stadium. A lot of UT fans aren’t big NFL fans anyway. So IDK how many of them “changed”. But yes, a lot of people became Colts fans.

And Vitello won’t come close to Manning in fans, or contributions to the university. He’s done with UT. JMO.

For me, you have to look at the full cycle of contributions to determine VFL. I'm not sure a one and done can ever be a VFL. But someone who stays the course and makes a difference, which I think all of these guys did. But I somewhat have an outsider view. I also think he earned the right to take them because he brought them. He did not steal them. I also believe that behind the scenes most knew what was happening and they stayed for a purpose and that was accomplished. Now they are leaving.
Once again, @preacherman20 puts things in the proper perspective.

Please stop using VFL for everyone. Only a few prove to be VFLs these days.

Please DO use Vol For Now (VFN) until the complete their time at UT.

No issues with Tony or his coaches leaving. They did their time and won a natty. Much love for them.

I tend to agree with the original poster. If these assistants were that great they would have had a shot at the MLB level. Frankly, alot of MLB coaches didn't like the hire and probably won't work for him because of it. He had no choice really for sake of trust. But im not thrilled he is taking folks either but nobody cares about my opinion. Like I said about football. Money is gonna ruin it, if not now it will be coming soon.

"I have a feeling he is gonna bring that same energy and enthusiasm to the MLB he brought to college ball"

That's actually the part that concerns me the most about his future in the bigs. I'm just not sure how that translates. Grown men making more than you aren't really into the rah rah stuff. When the camera pans in the dugout, the average MLB manager looks like he's watching court TV or something. No emotion.

Interested to see how that plays out.

I have zero interest in Giants baseball. We’ll see how Tony does, but I expect him to be looking for another job in less than 5 years. I don’t blame him for pursuing the opportunity, I just don’t see his skillset translating. The MLB schedule is a grind and a cheerleader, hype guy is only going to go so far. I imagine it will wear on pro players pretty quick. Tony hasn’t exactly been a mastermind on in game strategy or pitching changes. In fact, he’s been kind of wonky in that area. Tony’s success will predicated on the GM and how well they do on building their roster. Period.

I’m just a noob when it comes to strategy and pitching changes myself. But I guarantee you Vitello got hired because he is a mastermind and not because he’s a hype guy.

Tony’s strengths are easy to see. Him being some sort of strategic mastermind is not one of those. Not sure what baseball tr you’ve been watching the last 8 years.

I'd sacrifice and survive a 5-year long lockout if it led to a salary cap in MLB.
The stars would still flock to the big market teams...salary cap or not...besides wanting to get paid theses guys want to win. You really believe teams like Pittsburgh and Colorado would have a chance with a Salary Cap? No player wants to play in those cities...

It isn't about what the players want or where they want to play. They don't want to play in those places because they know they have no chance to win because of the current setup. Pittsburgh and Colorado cannot afford to spend like NY and LA.

A salary cap would prevent teams like the Dodgers and Yankees from hoarding all the talent because they couldn't afford them all. Right now, there is no legitimate safeguard in place to prevent the large market teams from stockpiling all the top-tier talent.

No one wants to play for the Jets or Titans in the NFL. No one wants to play for the Grizzlies in the NBA. But they will if they can offer the most money in many cases. Those leagues are set up to intersect salary and success. Large market MLB teams don't have to sacrifice one or the other because they can spend whatever they are willing to win.

Your pie in the sky theory that all the stars would flock to major markets only works in the current system because nothing prevents it. If you cap the spending, then they can only afford so many stars and the rest disperse elsewhere. That's simple, fundamental economics.

I know economics and I also know players will take less money to win Championships it's been done in every sport that has a Salary Cap... I guess we will just have to disagree...

We can certainly disagree, but the idea that a salary cap is not an equalizer is nonsensical. There is a reason the other major professional American sports leagues have one, and why the owners in MLB are willing to lock out the players and lose money over the issue. It is the current biggest stumbling block threatening a work stoppage following the 2026 season.

And sure, there will be a minority of players willing to take marginally less money to play for a team that is competitive, but it is just that, a minority. Under a salary cap, they will have to make that choice. Currently, they can just herd together with the same 5 or 6 teams AND get paid.

The Owners will never agree to a floor so I'm not going stress about it.. MLB Owners have fought for Salary Cap for years and just like the last three times the lockout will not solve the issue...

Not just that. But you go from playing in front of 7-8000 max on a Saturday to playing in front of 30,000 on a Tuesday night. It’s just a totally different ball game and something most competitors at that level want to try.

Pat Casey is the only person who has a World Series and a college WS ring and he was not a GM in the NLB. So TV has a chance to do something that has never been done—more power to him.
I don't remember Casey ever getting to the big leagues?
