Ukraine Protests

Could we only specify bama from Birmingham south?

I've got a better idea, let's trade him Ukrainian citizens for Bama fans in a one for one deal. And a straight up swap Yulia Tymoshenko for Nick Saban.

Can flat guarantee Putin wouldn't want anything else to do with the Ukraine after dealing with bammers for about a week. They win, we win and still get to keep those supple young Ukrainian ladies.

poke the bear, arm the opposition and try to destroy their economy. Yeah, what could go wrong?

A lot of those keep us out by making them stronger. You are all for the non-interventionist stances so I figure you'd be a lot happier with a strong Ukraine.

supplying arms and NATO defense treaties doesn't strike me as non-interventionist. Taking direct shots at the Russian economy definitely isn't

the guy is talking out of his ass with stuff like

“Expand significantly the U.S. and E.U. targeted sanctions against the most corrupt Russian government officials, companies, and financial institutions.

how many corrupt US bankers has he sanctioned or had put in jail?

So raising our own domestic production of oil and gas doesn't help the EU and us?

And supplying arms and training certainly doesn't hurt us in the long run. Of course, we can also blame Barry and Dick Lugar for helping destroy stocks of their weapons in the first place that helped put their military in a position to have to ask for help.

As for the bankers, we'd much rather bail them out than put them in jail. You should know this.

I don't believe it's about US production as much as it's simply furthering the agenda of ME countries to allow them better access to the EU. Sure it may be done by US companies like Exxon (who has been busy signing deals over there) but I don't believe it will actually be taken from the ground in the US.

you also can't take a shot at the biggest piece of Russia's economy and think it won't have consequences. That's why he's saying they need to back it up with weapons and NATO protection to make it work.

with the bankers maybe we worked out a deal where they'll off themselves instead of going to court. Seems like that's happening quite a bit lately. But seriously if he was truly concerned about corruption there's more than enough work to be done locally.

These proposals, or the threat of them, have gotten us in the military standoff we are in today:

“Enhance NATO's force presence, security cooperation, and military exercises, especially in Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic countries.

“Work within NATO to take all necessary steps that can prepare for the expansion of the alliance to include countries such as Georgia and Montenegro as soon as possible.

But either way, if you lessen the dependence of Europe on Russian gas, you have the economic effect of firing a shot across their bow. I said it before, Russia will find a place to sell their gas, but at the same time if we expend our markets a bit more in the process by selling more of ours on the open market, I'm all for it.

I'm not always for the expansion of NATO except when a country can/will be able to contribute significantly to the collective. Most of the Eastern European nations were set up already for this for the most part, but the former Soviet Republics were not (save the Ukraine and Belarus). So Poland, the Czech and Slovak Republics, Romania, etc were already in a position to contribute to the collective defense versus Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia that would rely greatly on NATO help during a conflict.

Power brokers in this nation, that's all I can say.

She kinda said it.

Yes, Tina Fey did say it...

ABC Brings Up 'I Can See Russia from My Backyard' in Palin Interview | NewsBusters

As Gibson and Palin discussed the conflict between Russia and Georgia, Gibson had asked last year, "What insight into Russian actions particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of this state give you?"

Palin responded: "They're our next door neighbors. And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska."

You suck again.

In context he was asking her what she knew about foreign policy. When you think about it that was kind of a dumb question since it was evident from the get go that she knows nothing about anything.

And you still can't distinguish the lines between fiction and reality by claiming she said something she didn't.

Hence, you suck again by your typical liberal ha-ha that gets proven, yet again, to be false. But you keep fighting the good fight sir, I applaud you.

Just so happens that the catchphrase, used to typify her 6 year old's understanding of geopolitics, was dead on.

Must be hard wrapping your mind around the distortion of truth and seething hate at someone who is inconsequential to your life.

I don't hate her. I think she's entertainingly dumb.

Now, the people who champion her as having any level of political acumen? Them I hate.

I got caught up in Palin talk earlier in the thread and then someone rightly reminded me: Who cares what she says?

A more important opinion:

Rohrabacher, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he opposes Russian troops in the Ukraine but supports letting the people of Crimea vote on whether they want to secede from Ukraine and become part of Russia.

"It's not the United States' job to go in and be the arbiter of every problem," he said in an interview this week outside the House chamber.

"The arbiter should be the people themselves through the ballot," added Rohrabacher, who said he supports an election monitored by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. "There's a whole section of Ukraine where the people think of themselves more as Russians than Ukrainians."

"The Cold War is over," he added. "Putin is not Satan."

Agreed. And based on what I've read, the vote would probably favor joining Russia. But the 97% with high turnout vote numbers are almost certainly not totally accurate. Hard to trust Russia, with troops already stationed, to orchestrate a legitimate vote.

I have no doubt Crimea wanted to join Mother Russia but the turn out and results are 99.9% doctored.
