The Tatars are Muslim and assume a sizable proportion of the population in Crimea and the Ukraine as well. If religion will play a role in any of this dispute, I'd place my money more on the tension between the Tatar minority and the dominant ethnic Russians in Crimea.

Yes in Crimea, no in the rest of Ukraine.

Don't know antyhing about them, but Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyivan Patriarchate has a different head than the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).

Right, but I think they all technically fall under the Eastern Orthodox church. Kind of like the way the Catholic Church eventually ends up at Rome.

The pro-Russian militias have been marking Tatar homes in Crimea and there have been reports of some Tatars leaving/being deported. It doesn't look good, that's how ethnic cleansing starts.

Not unlike the Bosnian Serb "militias" operating with the tacit approval/support of Belgrade.

Apparently Cher has entered this neo-Cold War between the Ukraine and Russia. According to BBC radio, Ukrainian bases have been playing Cher's greatest hits over loudspeakers, the aim being to make the Russian soldiers outside more placated and calm.

I guess this is the opposite approach to Panama.

Crimean parliament has organized a New Crimean Army to serve the autonomous republic.

This may very well all end in another week or two, but I'm getting closer and closer every day to leaning towards the negative on this one. I don't think this ends well.

Depends on who it's ending well for...

What looks to be Russian S-300 SAMs moving towards the Eastern Ukrainian border;
