Ukraine Protests

I have big doubts as to whether NATO would confront Russia at this point!

It would be a surprising turn of events if the alliance failed to protect a member state.

Which again highlights the importance of Ukraine to Russia. If that nation moves to the west, who does Russia have left on its side?

I think we should do the noble thing and provide refuge in the U.S. for all the hot Ukrainian women

It would be a sacrifice but I would be willing to take one in to help out my country

Nonsense. The US is not going to pick a fight with Russia over a former Soviet member state with whom we have no security agreement.

I don't care who the president is, or which state it is, there is no way the US is going toe to toe with Russia over something so attenuated to our own interests.

Depending how you view the Budapest Memorandum, one could argue we have legal basis to intervene.

Russia has Belarus and that's about it. Outside of that area they have friends in China,Iran and Syria

There's something to be said for home field advantage. IF this evolves into war I'm taking the fight straight into Russia.

That bunch of patsies will just lay down and take it like a woman. No worries for us.

In hindsight this 2008 NATO summit, in which Ukrainian membership was discussed, is interesting.

President Bush strongly supported Ukraine and Georgia becoming NATO action plan members; however, he was opposed by the United Kingdom, France and Germany. The British judgment is that, although there was full support for both Ukraine and Georgia, the question of when they joined should remain in the balance. Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, and President Nicolas Sarkozy of France are of the same mind.

In 2010 the now-exiled president announced that Ukraine was no longer pursuing NATO membership.

I wonder if there will be any future talk of NATO. It's one of the flashpoints with Russia.

Should the US:

1) move ships into the area?

2) mobilize any Western European bases or resources?

3) actually in some way suggest any kind of military response?
