Ukraine Protests

If you're revising the reality of what's happening today, it's not so difficult to do so for something 75 years ago.

I still think it odd that Germany and Russia get together to celebrate WWII.

So does Angela.

Germany and Russia don't get together to celebrate WW2. Most Germans are embarrassed and ashamed of this era in their history.

The semblance of Merkel is that they understand and own this part of history and will forever be sorry.

I hosted an exchange student from Germany for almost 6 mos. She was my daughters age and I can tell you firsthand that "nazi history" is something that they are very ashamed of to this day.

And FTR, I understand that America played a KEY role in defeating fascism. We spent billions of dollars in our effort to support Russia and our allies, along with the giving of several hundred thousand young American lives. However, regardless of who their leader was, the Soviet Union payed a much higher price. Losing anywhere from 25-30 million soldiers and civilians is the ULTIMATE sacrifice...let's be real! No way on Gods green earth that America would ever sacrifice this number for the homeland. Let's not try to take away the sacrifice that these people paid to fight Hitler.

Land lease program or not, the Russian PEOPLE deserve some credit without dragging them down with Stalin. They were fighting an invader into their homeland. 99% of them never knew of the Molotov/Ribbentrop pact, if that makes sense?!

All countries have dark sides of their history, us included!

And another for the record....I've had direct grandfathers/father fight in EVERY major war since the civil war up unto Vietnam. My ancestors came from Scotland and via Indiana eventually settled in southern Georgia. My great great great grandfather fought in the civil war....originally from Fitgerald, Georgia his unit was adopted into the army of Tennessee. He fought at the battle of Franklin, battle of Nashville. He met a young woman while in Franklin and after the war was over he came back to marry her. Her name was Matilda. My family has been in the Franklin, Brentwood area ever since.

I'm proud to be American, just not proud of what we've become. This is NOT the America I grew up in. We don't respect other religions, practices of govt and IMO it's all because of the dollar. People that represent us are not us, if that makes sense.

Believe it or not, I'm a patriot at heart and would defend my country/family quick as any of you. It's in my blood!!! BUT, I also have a mind of my own that sees beyond the lies to make money as opposed to what's right.

Slavery ≠ concentration camps, but shame doesn't stop some people from celebrating the confederacy today.

That's good.

No way on Gods green earth that America would ever sacrifice this number for the homeland.

It's a moot point now, as warfare has changed, but how do you know? America has never seriously been invaded.

It is a moot point, correct! However, in my oponion we are fighting ghosts, not the real enemy. The enemy is our govt and people can't or aren't willing to see this. There are too many inconsistencies and down right lies for why we wage war today.

Define "seriously."

By a foreign military sufficiently strong to overthrow the government.

Perhaps the British in 1812.

But really, did they pose a threat to American way of life sufficient that rational men, women, and children would throw themselves in front of muskets in resistance?

On another note, something I've been thinking about. This by no means implies that Americans have been or are being treated like the Jewish race, but has America now replaced (or at least does it rival) Jews for the world's scapegoat?

What I mean is, for a good deal of the rest of the world, has America now become a "more than convenient" excuse for the inability of many peoples to either get along with one another or for the internal problems of a nation and the ineptitude of its leader (what I refer to as the "Venezuela model")?

The brain drain continues in Russia:

It's understandable though. Every nation's leaders need to create an "enemy" in the minds of their people in order to achieve whatever agenda they may have.

For a good deal of the last century, for Americans, this meant thinking about the Soviets like our Russian friends currently do towards us. Now, I suppose it's radical Islam for the US, although it just isn't the same. Not a nice coherent political entity like the USSR was.

This is a lot of dry-run maneuvering, if you ask me. Poroshenko’s law allows for up to 1,000 American troops to participate in each of these exercises, alongside an equal number of Ukrainian “National Guardsmen,” and we will insist on the quotation marks when referring to this gruesome lot, about whom more in a minute.

Take a deep breath and consider that 1,000 American folks, as Obama will surely get around to calling them, are conducting military drills with troops drawn partly from Nazi and crypto-Nazi paramilitary groups…. Sorry, I cannot add anything more to this paragraph. Speechless.

Okay, that's as far as I got before I just ctrl-W'd straight out. Calling the Ukranian fighters "nazis" is a classic Kremlin move. This guy just comes across as nothing more than a somewhat elevated mouthpiece that good well-informed people like Pacer and Ras just lick straight up.

This is at least somewhat less totally-incendiary-and-in-left-field as most Salon articles, I'll give it that.
