It's part of a familiar strategy.
It's easier to paint yourself as the "valient defender of your rights" when you have a definable and clear enemy. The US is the clear enemy of the Russian state and, therefore, the Russian media which is one-in-the-same.

This, oddly enough, wasn't sparked by the US going into Iraq or the Syrian/Libyan hullabaloo. Russians started adamantly disapproving of the US only when Russia got into Ukrainian business. Odd, that.
It's a similar thing to US approval of France when they correctly made the right call on us going into Iraq. It wasn't the US going into Iraq that was the media focus, it was
France being sissies. Media diversions and then good ole Russian whataboutism are in full swing.
