Call me crazy, but when I think of vast arable lands, the Russian Far East doesn't come to mind.

I think Putin's trying to do two things here: 1) Feel up the vacuum that is Siberia and the Far East, as there's been some concerns (whether justified or not) about the size of Russia, its population, and potential foreign meddling for resources there; and, 2) make Russia more self-sufficient. As long as each family can provide for themselves from the land (especially since salaries are going down), then you don't have to be as worried about a) foreign sanctions and b) domestic discontent.

Not just an .ru page, a dumb one.

We all know that the U.S. is not a passive observer in Europe, but this narrative that everything happening in Eastern Europe is an American plot against Russia is silly.

Russian apologists give way too much credit to the capabilities of Washington.

It's part of a familiar strategy.

It's easier to paint yourself as the "valient defender of your rights" when you have a definable and clear enemy. The US is the clear enemy of the Russian state and, therefore, the Russian media which is one-in-the-same.

Is some of this explained by propaganda, and the relentlessly negative coverage of the United States by state-run Russian media? Yes. Very clearly some of the downward pressure on public opinion comes from outlets like Rossiskaya Gazeta, Interfax, Pervy Kanal, and Russia Today.

This, oddly enough, wasn't sparked by the US going into Iraq or the Syrian/Libyan hullabaloo. Russians started adamantly disapproving of the US only when Russia got into Ukrainian business. Odd, that.

It's a similar thing to US approval of France when they correctly made the right call on us going into Iraq. It wasn't the US going into Iraq that was the media focus, it was France being sissies. Media diversions and then good ole Russian whataboutism are in full swing.

It appears that we're the closest to full-scale war again between Ukraine and Russia since the spring/summer. Russian unit seem to have taken the lead again in the battle at the airport as well. The front-lines have seen a major escalation in the fighting.

It's not just Russia. Most of the world is now tired of US sponsored terrorism, coups and global policing..

While hyperbolic, the general point is accurate.

I'm sick of the US' foreign policy. I'm sick of the "damned if they do, damned if they don't" issues we face.

While American isolationism actually plays into the hand of the Russians, I'm in favor of it. I'm sick of spending billions-trillions to try to stabilize a nation only to have it yell for us to leave and then descend into chaos within a year or two... after signing over massive contracts for our very adversaries.

Just focus on trade with our partners in Asia/Europe and establishing better ties with South America. Outside of that? Screw 'em. Boko Haram wants to slaughter people? ISIS wants to slaughter people?

It's cold, but I'm sick of it being our problem.
