Can Putin be trusted? US weighs sanctions pullback as Russia shifts course on Ukraine | Fox News

The Obama administration could reconsider a looming package of sanctions on the Russian economy as Vladimir Putin makes an about-face and signals a willingness to ease the crisis Moscow helped create in Ukraine.

In recent days, Putin has worked with lawmakers in Moscow toward rescinding a parliamentary resolution authorizing him to use the Russian military in Ukraine -- the parliament's upper house canceled it on Wednesday. Putin also urged the new Ukrainian government to extend a weeklong cease-fire and called for talks between Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels who are widely believed to be backed by the Kremlin.

On my way to campus every morning I tend to listen to BBC Radio. This morning, a reporter was interviewing Ukrainian (ethnic Russian I assume) refugees who had fled to camps being set up across the border in Russia. Anyhow, one of the individuals interviewed shared that it was knowledge among the pro-Russian side that Kiev is killing ethnic Russians and sending their bodies to America in order to have the organs harvested.

I about ran off the road.

Of all the asinine things I've ever heard in my life, this one ranks right up there at the top. It's akin to people during the Middle Ages warning their children to stay away from Jews because they would eat them.

I just can't comprehend that kind of sheer ignorance. They might as well just go ahead and add the fact that we Americans also eat the Russian bodies after harvesting their organs.

You obviously haven't watched many US Presidential elections and the ideas the common "voter" has about what the opposing party will do have you?

Plenty. And there's plenty of fear tactics used by each side. I don't know that "the other side will harvest your organs" has ever come up, however.

What do you expect when they call the new government a fascist junta?

Which station? What time? It might be archived on their website.

It was the Sirius/XM BBC Radio site. I would imagine the exact same programming comes on the BBC World Radio website. I think the program is BBC World Now or BBC World Today, or something like that.

Hard to figure out without the approximate time.

BBC has a number of offerings, if you're into Internet radio.

It's nuts man. I follow several bilingual (Russian/American) journalists on twitter and they've been translating Russian social media propaganda since day 1.

Outlandish accusations are constantly being made, and they're backed up with images from horror movies. Funny you mention cannibalism, that's also been a common accusation directed towards pro-Kiev forces.

These poor eastern Europeans are simple enough to believe in this stuff.

Anyone nostalgic enough to long for the days of the Hammer and Sickle certainly have a few screws loose.

I'm not quite sure the program's full time slot (because I only get to hear what they have for me on my 10-15 minute commute), but the time it aired this morning would have been sometime between 9:15-9:35.

Unfortunately, that's about all I know.

And to be honest, I'm not completely sure the exact words the individual said (because I wasn't really paying that close attention until "America" and "organs" came up to perk my ears), but I'm positive the implication was that they had heard that dead eastern Ukrainians were being taken to America for harvesting. For all I know, the person could have even been referring to what they were hearing about people who went missing (perhaps kidnapping and harvesting life individuals). The reporter even clarified that there was absolutely no evidence to back up the claim.

It's very frustrating. It's almost like you're dealing with people who are stuck in a medieval mentality or something.

And, actually, there may be some truth to this....

The saying about Russia is that it's almost always 100 years behind the rest of us, although according to the book on Russia's 1000 year history I'm currently reading, that's not always true. Early Kiev and Novgorod, for instance, were possibly as advanced (even democratically speaking), if not more so, than any other European city-state/kingdom. However, the author makes the case that, whereas the rest of Europe was able to make it through the Middle Ages and move on to the Early Modern period (and then be welcome to immediately embrace the Enlightenment), the Mongol occupation of Kievan Rus and Muscovy kept Russian culture, technology, ideas, and economics arrested for 250 years. In other words, they've never quite overcome those 250 years, at least in terms of Western liberalism.

Speaks to the general Russian character. Generally speaking, the individual be damned! Collective and national greatness is key. And, no matter how ****ty the USSR was, we all have to admit that it was certainly one of the most powerful nations in world history. Certainly a nation anyone priding collective strength (whether it be in bending to a far left ideology or a far right) over individual interests would glorify.

The Russian government is sending out reservists call-up notices;

Why would a government need to call up reservists other than perhaps in a state of emergency resulting from political strife or a natural disaster? As far as I can tell, neither of these are occurring at the moment in Russia.

I'm not trying to be a sensationalist or any thing, but that just got me to thinking. I listened to a presentation before a NATO assembly back in late May by Andrei Illarionov, once a Kremlin big-wig economist and former right-hand man of Putin himself, now a Russian dissident. He now works for the CATO Institute, and he claims that the events that have unfolded in Ukraine have been planned by the Kremlin for years. He even stated that the Kremlin has included its Ukraine strategy into a broader strategy of exerting Russian power globally, what he called a "Fourth World War" (Kremlin term, not his). He said it would be waged through espionage, manipulation of national/regional economies, and manipulation of power/ideology in other countries. Militarily only if necessary. The main goal was completely destroying what the Kremlin calls the "Anglo-American world" and of possibly reuniting the "Russian World," if not through actual national integration at least through spheres of influence and power.

Sounds quacky, but when you consider that many others who have made similar accusations against Moscow have ended up dead, you have to believe the man at least believes strongly in what he's doing, whether or not he's completely accurate.

Here's the presentation if you have the time or interest to listen. The actual presentation is only about 45 minutes:

@DefenceToday

Reports that Russia is calling up reservists may be linked to an upcoming military drill

Even if it's truly for drills, the Russians don't seem to care what kind of messages this sends...
