Ukraine Protests

The hostility shown now isn't something that could have popped up in the last six months.

Frankly, I wasn't paying attention before Maidan, so I'm wondering how the country seemingly held together so well for the last 20 years.

It does make one wonder.

Maybe they're responding to a Craigslist ad?

How are all these people and stuff coming across the border? There must be zero security right now.

Crazy, apparently a coup is under way lead by the Vostok Battalion against the leadership of the Donetsk People's Republic.

That's not exactly hard to do. Look at our own borders and ask yourself that question.

As for weapons and equipment, Russia is littered with stuff they've been storing up since WWII and I'd be willing to bet even the current Russian military doesn't know where they squirreled everything away.

???

What does the Vostok Battalion stand for?

If you mean literally, I think it means "Eastern" (Chechnya) Battalion, as opposed to the Zapad ("Western").

If you mean politically/culturally, that's a much more difficult question.

Chechens are an interesting lot. Some are probably there as mere mercenaries, rogues, criminals, and/or adventurers. However, I'm convinced that the majority of them were most likely sent by the pro-Russian Chechen president as a good will jester to Moscow.

One thing I find interesting is that some elements of the pro-Russian side appear to me to have injected some sort of "holy war" rhetoric into this conflict, even as simple as declaring one of their groups the "Russian Orthodox Army." If this is more than mere rhetoric, then it makes one wonder how that will mix with the Chechen influx. I doubt any of them are jihadists (in its strict sense), but I would imagine a good deal of them are Muslim. Perhaps this is playing a role in the coup that Burhead mentioned? Most likely, I think it's probably an attempt to curb the insurrection which, in my opinion, has probably now run a bit amok of Moscow's control/intentions. Possibly to bring it back in to Moscow's domain?

I wonder if the woman at 8:30 speaks for a majority of the population there?

The majority of polls I've seen suggests the the majority (maybe 60 percentile or so) of people in the East are actually pro-Ukrainian, although perhaps not supporters of the interim govt. or even of Poroshenko.

It's hard to say though. Most of these videos have been pro-Russians running amok all over the place, burning and breaking ****, shouting loudly in drunken voices, and cussing fascists, Nazis, Ukrainians, fascists, Americans, Europeans, Americans, fascists, and Jew Nazi fascists Americans (for the simplified, all-inclusive term). From the media accounts we receive, it appears as if the pro-Russian side is the largest and strongest.

However, I have a feeling more than one or two pro-Ukrainians is reluctant to speak out of fear that some Cossack-wannabe will stop by to whack them in the head with a blunt object, vandalize their home/business, and rob them.

Yes, but when you see what's happening on the ground (separatists continuing to control everything, only 15% of the people voting) it makes you start to wonder.

I guess if you're an average joe and you're looking at unknown masked gunmen roaming the streets, perhaps the best course is to lay low and quietly go about your daily business.

More on the potential "coup."

Ukraine's Rebels Are in a Power Struggle Against Each Other

On a related note, I'm still waiting on any actual evidence that there are native English speakers/Americans fighting in eastern Ukraine against the pro-Russian side. RT and other pro-Russian news sites/websites have been claiming for over a month now that somewhere around 400 American mercenaries for the private contractor Greystone (formerly Blackwater) have been on the ground in the East, fighting alongside Kiev's forces. These sites are still claiming this to be the case, and I'm still waiting on the proof.

On the other hand, there's been no dearth of proof that Russian citizens are all over the ground in the East. Russian mercenaries are either much more brazen than American mercenaries, or much more stupid.

That, or just the fact that Russian mercenaries are there and American mercenaries are not. Pretty simple actually.

AP Sources: Russian Troops Leaving Ukraine Border - ABC News

U.S. defense officials said Thursday that Russia has pulled most of its forces away from the Ukraine border, a withdrawal that the U.S. has been demanding for weeks.

They said about seven battalions remained, amounting to a couple of thousand troops. U.S. officials had estimated as many as 40,000 Russian forces had been aligned along the border with a restive eastern Ukraine that has been wracked with violence between government security forces and pro-Russian separatists.

The defense officials spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the precise numbers.

I don't know about mercenaries but I won't bet against CIA involvement, at least behind the scenes. Heaven knows they need help from someone.

Likely that more will soon go down in Slovyansk.

Name me a country that doesn't have a CIA operative working, and I'll name you a Pauly Shore movie that has some existential substance.

The "Kiev junta fascists are killing their own people" narrative is getting weaker by the day. The DPR itself has now admitted that basically all its fighters killed on Monday at the Donestk airport were Russian citizens.

Ukraine's President-elect vows vengeance over helicopter attack - CNN.com

Edit: And the reason they are finally officially admitting it is that they are hoping that Mother Russia will step in to aid them since its her citizens afterall that are being killed in eastern Ukraine.

I'd say it's a bit more involved than that.

I'd like to think that if there were American mercenaries fighting, they'd be doing a better job than what we're seeing. Things aren't going so well when your generals are being killed.

"Donetsk People's Republic" Give me a freakin' break.
