Ukraine Protests

A firefight has broken out at a Mariupol military base. Russian troops demanded the surrender of Ukrainian military personnel and equipment. Ukrainian side refused and the Russians stormed the base. Causalities are being reported and it seems the gunfight is still going on.

Big meeting underway.

I think this is going to get a lot worse. I had hopes that Russia would stop at Crimea and call it a day. Putin knows that the West is as weak as it has ever been and is not going to stop or be told what to do.

There is going to be a joint statement issued by the four parties at the Geneva conference shortly, though I doubt it accomplishes anything.

Is this the first time anyone from the interim Ukraine government has met with the Russian government?

Ever watched "Fiddler on the Roof," Grand Vol? haha!

Yeah, it's historically a problem. Western Russia (which included Ukraine and Poland at the time) were home to numerous Jewish pogroms. Jews were excluded from Slavic society and cossacks occasionally came in to smack some of them around.

Obviously those sentiments remain today, and there is worry that the neo-fascists, ultranationalist elements of the pro-Ukrainian group will resort to human rights violations. Honestly, though, Russia just says this. They couldn't give a crap about Jews either.

This antisemitism is a propaganda ploy by Putin to get the precise reaction he's now getting in the West. We're falling for it. Because we always do. We go for the headline. Always!

Reporters jumped on it (without fact checking ) cause it was a cheap headline, not because of anything resembling reality.

I see this as another, "Peace for Our Time" type agreement but I'm a pessimist by nature. Though Lavrov was completely contradicted by the statements Putin made today. VVP isn't going to let this simply go by the way side. He wants the east badly.

So how does the Kremlin propose the separatists militias disarm they allegedly do not control? I'm skeptical of this deal bringing an end to the crisis. I mean just look at Putin's call in show from today; he just called the eastern portions of the Ukraine, Novorossiya, not a term he'd use I'd think if the crisis was supposedly ending...

I initially took that to refer to Right Sector militias.

At any rate, at least they were talking face to face, which itself is progress.

Putin is just playing cat and mouse with the west. Any agreement will be broken soon. There is no feasible solution to this doesn't result in a potential world war.

Except the Russian military doesn't have the capacity to fight a global war....
