The recent findings from the UK researchers have got the Russian govt. in such a tizzy they had to quickly come up with this stinking pile of bull dung to counter.

Whatever, but the fact remains (and cannot be disputed by either side) that several rebel leaders posted to social media around the exact time of the MH17 downing, bragging about another Ukrainian plane they had shot out of the sky.

While those posts were quickly deleted and the remains of that plane of which they speak never materialized or found, a downed civilian jetliner, MH17, however, was promptly located in the exact same area. Getting to the wreckage and debris if you weren't a rebel was a little dodgy for a few weeks, but, the outside world was finally allowed to get there.

It is a testament to the abilities of the Russian media machine, no matter how silly it can often be, that this issue is still considered up for "debate."

it also conveniently ignores that Russia has been dumping a lot of stockpiled weapons into the conflict. early on that was one of Ras and Pacer's points of why Russia wasn't necessarily involved because it was all old tech. then we had the rash of new stuff around the airport and that silenced that round of denial.

It is amazing that there is a better chance of a soccer commissioner going to jail before we ever see anyone at one of these Too Big To Fail banks go to jail...

Our DOJ has proven they are very good at prosecuting corruption...... when they're going after foreigners.

I agree.

Probably the only post he's made in this thread of nearly 12,000 posts that's attached to reality.

I actually often like reading some of his economics (purely economics, that is) commentary. I agree with a lot he has to say in that domain.

But, a savvy geopolitical analyst he is not.

so far no one has stepped up to claim any ownership of this fight. its always a "he said, she said" thing. one giant mess that keeps the west out of it because they have no idea what is going on and the don't want to get drug into a mess if it is Ukraine's doing.

If Russia is smart (which is kind of a dumb "if," but relative to their aims I mean), it will not push these spring/summer offensives too far.

For the Russians, the objective should not be actually taking full control of the Donbass, although they may very well want to create a land bridge to Crimea (and this would not necessarily mean having to have full control of the Donbass). Instead, the objective should be doing just enough to keep the status quo, so to speak, but with the "separatists" having the upper hand over the Ukrainians. This means that the conflict will remain frozen, effectively preventing the entire nation of Ukraine from ever fully leaving the Russian sphere and from ever achieving its own idea of sovereignty, which, over the last decade or two, has looked more and more like a desire to move away from the Russian sphere.

On the contrary, the biggest mistake Russia could make is to either push the Ukrainians completely out of the Donbass in order to annex the region or to push them out and create a "sovereign" puppet state in the Donbass. Either of these decisions would be a decisive mistake, if we are to believe the Russian narrative that Russia is constantly seeing its influence reduced and being surrounded more and more by increasingly hostile states and forces. Taking the Donbass out of the orbit (that is, by annexing it or by making it its own state) will have the perhaps unintended consequence of effectively greenlighting the process by which Ukraine becomes an EU state and possibly even a NATO state.

I think the Russians are happy with the status quo, at least for now. All they really have to do is fire up the guns every now and then (as they indeed do and seem to be about to do again) to keep it an honest shooting match, while refraining from pushing too far.

Whatever your thoughts on who the culprit of this conflict is, it's just sad to see the Ukrainian people's rights and sovereignty shat upon constantly by outsiders.
