Poroshenko giving an amazing speech in a joint of session of Congress right now. He is urging us to steadfast in support of Ukraine, saying that the Ukrainian war is not just a war for Ukraine but a war for Europe and America and a war for freedom, democracy, and rule of law. Also he is urging that we need to start sending both lethal and non-lethal aid to the Ukrainian military and has asked for Ukraine to be designated as a Major Non-NATO Ally.

I don't keep up with this, so is he right?

"There is no military solution to the current conflict, there are only political and diplomatic paths of varying degrees of complexity and nastiness. Pretending that there is a military solution, as Corker and Menendez have, will only prolong the conflict."

wat? because Russia has proven to be malleable to outside political pressure......

along the money wins war thing, it would be equally bad for Russia to go to war with the US as it is for Ukraine to maintain independence.

Russians love their children, too

Do you think he would do it? I have to admit, I think he would if he were to weigh the decision a positive over the negative economic consequences. That really is the key though, because, while the folks propagating this line of thought (I've read other articles suggesting he could do this as well) identify its strategic significance, they fail to take into account its economic consequences. While the world would not react militarily to such an attack (I'm firmly convinced), it would launch the biggest trade war in history. Russia would be isolated beyond repair. While Putin is a sociopath (he did, afterall, have 300 of his fellow citizens killed to get him elected in 1999 - the evidence is too damning but Russians can put their heads in the sand if they like), I don't think he's a madman. So, I don't think he'd do it because of the economic consequences being too strong.

Not sure the Russian General Staff would go through with a preemptive nuclear strike, no matter how much they love Putin. Neither would the other P5 nuclear armed states IMO.

The P5 nations wouldn't do a thing about it. This line of argument is right in that respect, in my opinion. As for the preemptive strike, it is true that he would have to go through several channels, some of which might be resistant. Admittedly, to your point, convincing your buds in the FSB to blow up a bunch of apartments and Russians in the process to allow you to pin it on Chechens and start another war there to get your dismal poll numbers up right before election day is a different matter from convincing the Russian high brass to get on board with killing a million Baltic residents with the first nuclear strike since Nagasaki just to prove that NATO is a hollow shell (which it would probably be in that case).
