I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of that was the result of Russian airstrikes. Too pin-point and too wide-ranging for a bunch of grassroots protesters who were supposed to be dead in the water just two weeks ago.

Well lets back up... VICE News. I've pretty much left them alone throughout this thread. I think if we are really going to be honest, we have to admit that VICE sensationalizes and has a bias just as much as RT. I actually think they sensationalize far greater than RT, imo. I really discounted Vice last year when I saw a video series they did in Colombia. I would say 40-50% of the video was filled with outright lies, and I've really never thought to much more about them.

There's an interesting design flaw on Russian tanks. When the ammunition compartment catches fire, the entire turret blows sky high. I haven't seen one blow, but I've seen the aftermath and it's similar to that video. Having said that, the scenes I saw were caused by M1 tanks and air strikes. I can't explain what's shown on the video. If a ground force caused that, you would expect casualties on the other side in a battle that large. If the Russians did use air strikes, you would think there would be radar evidence of bombers. MLRS (rockets) could do it I guess, but I don't know if the buildings would still be standing.

Sensationalize? Most of the videos posted here have been matter-of-fact accounts of what the news crew encountered on the ground.

True, they can skew what's presented through editing. But given all the crap going on, I'd hardly say they are "sensationalizing" the videos.

my hearts go out to the Russian families (and soldiers) who are being lied to. At least we let our boys know they are going to war, even if we don't give/have good/real reasons.

The Russian education system is so bad that most are not smart enough to realise they are being lied to. Those that do realise are in opposition and threatened constantly by Putin and his oligarchical cronies. And those that do realise and are not in opposition are smart enough to keep their mouths shut so that they do not get targeted.

Putin basically runs a nationalist message which is always lapped up by the uneducated, and (as a result of poor education) bigoted, masses. The life expectancy in Russia is dire, the quality of life is dire, the social freedoms are dire. The situation in Russia locally is becoming so bad that even Putin knows he will struggle in the near future.

To combat this future struggle Putin has basically gone on a foreign imperialistic crusade. All the attention is on foreign, not local, problems and he preaches a nationalist message about saving Russian speaking minorities in Crimea and eastern Ukraine. It's just another way of galvanizing the bigoted, uneducated masses that will likely keep him in power.

Such a strategy, while it may have been successful many times in history, may not be so effective today though. The EU and USA as a strong combined power, along with NATO, did not exist when these kind of policies were working in the past and they will likely force Putin to back away and eventually admit defeat. But probably not before his next election in 2018, sadly.

from what i have read a vast majority of their army is/are conscripts. but i agree strange it isn't the 'professional' force going in. of course that could be to conserve their strength for the real hammer blow, whenever it comes. Right now this is a battle of attrition and you don't want to waste your best on that.

*also we won't be hearing about their top of the line troops getting captured/breaking down- they are too good for that.

Ukraine will see how much support they have from the US citizenry when the price of oil and gas go through the roof. Fortunately, I've read Europe has been stockpiling. Also, I don't know how the value of the ruble relative to the dollar will impact Russia since they've negotiated several trade deals that bypass the dollar.
