Ukraine Protests

Someone's tweet got me to wondering: Why do Russians celebrate WWII so much?

Sure, they defeated Germany, but at what cost? 20 million people killed.

Is that really a "victory" worth celebrating?

It's more of the result than anything. They were still a century behind prior to the war. Stalin still had not unified the country. The outcome was a national victory, Russia as a major world power, and the economy coming out of the stone age. It was a coming out party for Russia as an equal and the people (in general mind you) were unified.

It's a way to really unify the country - those who hated the Communist era still have nationalist feelings. So across the board it is sort of the token "remember" concept. I guess the closest we have is 9/11 and it seems to have lost its luster.

That's what they do when Communist/Socialist policies in the name of income/housing/bank account equality destroy a country from the inside out. They realized long before the wall came down their policies were abysmal failures so victory over Germany was something they could point to as an outward expression of their pride, although deep down the people despised their govt. as much as they despised the Nazis. They are extremely prideful people with a sense of toughness almost to the point where it's a defense mechanism b/c of their history under Stalin and other Soviet leaders. I've met several people who lived in Communist Russia. They're seething over what Putin is doing right now, it scares the hell out of them all over again.

THAT will cause Kyiv to go nuts. Looks like they are dumping all sorts of things out there to provoke responses from Kyiv. Kitchen sink included....

Now AP is reporting Moldova has closed the border and put border forces on alert. Very strange set of reports coming breaking right now.

I get the remembrance aspect to it. But the national "accomplishment" was really that Russia had a lot more soldiers to send out into the machine gun fire than the Germans did.

Anonymous has been releasing information they've uncovered. I would not be surprised more info like this comes out. They released info over the weekend showing Russia was the one cutting off the water lines coming into Crimea from Ukraine. Russia wanted to make sure Crimeans were angry at Ukraine.

And yes I would be cautious about a lot of info...the old KGB Active Measures programs come to mind on disinformation.

You actually think Crimean's WANTED to be annexed and actually voted for it?

I have no clue. I'm not in Crimea, nor am I a native Crimean. I have no doubt, however, that the 97% figures offered by the Russian government are inflated. On the other hand, I'm a little skeptical of the 15% figures.

Anonymous gets a lot of stuff wrong, and I wouldn't put it past them to make up stuff as well. They consist of hackers and trolls.

Anonymous does some good things and does some bad things. Basically, they're like just about every other collection of individuals in the world, with a few exceptions.

using this approach we can say less than 30% of people voted for Obama in 2012!

(turnout x percent of turnout voting for)

I understand that turnout and voting results presented were much different but the 15% # is an odd way to describe the election - sensationalism.

83% versus 30% turnout is a pretty startling disparity.

I think the world generally realizes the election was a sham. But at the end of the day Russia has control over it and pretty much neutered Ukraine's navy.

It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything. Joseph Stalin

Some suggestion that the total death toll from Friday in Odessa will hit 50 by the time all is said and done. Also, Ukrainian government is now claiming a total of 34 dead from fighting in Sloviansk yesterday (30 rebels and 4 Ukrainian soldiers).
