UCF expert weighs in on Heupel

That's not the most encouraging thing I've read.

Heupel has a better track record than Pruitt, Dooley, Kiffin, and even Butch Jones before being hired, but he's still an unknown quantity to some extent. Hope this isn't true.

My biggest concern is his defenses. Seems like the typical Air Raid offense that scores a bunch of points, but D struggles. He's going to have to have a functional D to win in the SEC. He's also going to have to recruit at a very high level. You can't get #20 ranked classes and win the SEC.

Boy, I sure hope CJH has figured out that he's going to need a good defense in the SEC. Maybe someone in the athletic department will tell him.

The money wasn't the deciding factor. We'd gone high enough to make him one of the top 5 highest paid men in college football (he's not even in the top 10 right now). He knew it was enough. He just wasn't ready to put himself in a position to fail early on, given sanctions ahead, when he's already in a good place at a Power 5 program that he has more than once called his dream job. I mean, the man grew up two hours from Happy Valley. That's where his clan is, his heart is. Of course he wasn't going to leave for a massive rebuild job 500 miles and 5 states away.

It was always a longshot for Danny White to go out and bring Franklin to Knoxville. One has to believe Danny knew that before he even started, but given Franklin's proven ability to build success quickly at broken places (Vandy, post-Sandusky Penn State), he had to take the shot.

JF has heard about Vol Twitter and the such

He doesn't want any of that getting sideways

That Vandy background just wouldn't set right with so many, seemingly

That would be true of ANY coach that comes to UT from outside of the SEC. I don't think it is fair to say he regressed when a lot of his key players opted out of this past season. I do believe we will score a lot more points than we have in the past. I just pray he sees the need for a strong defense in the SEC.
He will see the need, it's weather he can do something about it or not.

I read or heard on the radio, can't remember at this point, that Franklin wanted 9 years/100 million dollars. Jimbo/Saban money and guaranteed long term. Basically by that counter he was saying no but taking a shot we may be crazy and desperate.

Was curious about his team defense ratings while he was at UCF, the following are the rankings while he was there. Wondering how much opt outs hurt them this year. If he can replicate those 2018-19 ratings, I'll feel better about his potential here.

I’m beginning to Heupel is going to make Danny White look like a genius.

CJH was not in my top 10 list of candidates, even though I felt like we should target guys who have a history of developing QBs and putting points on the board but he should have been. He’s seems better with QBs than Napier, Chadwell, and Malzahn. He may turn out to be elite in that respect.

Then you don’t know

Correct.

Because unless I missed it somewhere else, the only place where I have seen that UT even spoke to Franklin was people posting on VN. It could be the only place where Franklin was even considered was in some people`s minds.

They have a fan base that is new money. They’ve never experienced winning. Now they have and are spoiled little brats. They think never losing a game is sustainable and ignore things like roster turn over or covid disrupting practice/players available.

Heupel can flat out coach offense, out scheme other teams’ defenses, and build up QBs.

For him to win here he’s going to have to build one hell of a defensive staff. If he can and see results on that side of the ball. The future will begin to be bright.

No link. I just know boosters wouldn't turn loose of the money to hire Franklin. Plus if you look at our history of hiring coaches we have always went bargain hunting.
Not this time. We couldn't get Franklin because we are a garbage program. No proven coach wanted to touch us with a 10 foot pole, especially with the potential NCAA sanctions inbound.

JH needs to bring in a solid DC for sure. We all know he has a good mind for offense. I have my doubts he Will be able To land top 12 classes nationally and top six in the SEC unless he hires some absolute beasts on the recruiting trail. Hopefully he can get it done.
He does need a very strong DC but hopefully as talent rich as the state is next year or two he can get us a top 10 class with the Tennessee boys. Of course he’s way behind but I’m hopeful Simpson, Hayden, and maybe the Nolen kid will want to play for the state university and Hayden said the other day most of the top state recruits are good friends and talk about playing together. So maybe we get that proverbial ball rolling but time will tell!

Looked at Frost's defensive numbers in 2016/2017 and they were similar. He brought the same DC with him to Nebraska and they've been awful, so take this with a grain of salt I guess. Maybe Heupel having the same AD at Tennessee will help.

But if there's nothing from UT or Franklin to verify this, isn't it just speculation?
Sure it's speculation. These guys do not KNOW anything. They are just guessing and trying to put a negative spin on it. None of us Know about the inner workings of the deals that go on in the Atletic department.

Better chance than a DC being hired and needing to place a decent OC...but then interfering. Many of us, myself included, bashed Tyson Helton...there’s a story there.

DW pores over Twitter looking for the smallest slights...maybe he’ll notice? 😉
