Price wasn’t too high...he turned us down.I don’t know what to think about the hire. Once again I gave our New AD the benefit of the doubt. But then word gets out that we indeed tried to hire James Franklin but the price was too high.
I was surprised w/ the AD and then the coaching hire, but hopefully it works out. If I had to bet, we will be in the same situation four yrs from now and saying Heupel was over his head. Hope Not!!

We went bargain hunting with Dooley and Butch. After they annihilated the program, we were talking to some pretty big time players. But, after the Schiano mess, we fire the AD, hire Fulmer, and Fulmer hires Pruitt quickly, to bring some stability. Now, the program is such a mess, that no one wants the job. Unless you count Hugh Freeze and Lane Kiffen. But, The University will never hire either of them.No link. I just know boosters wouldn't turn loose of the money to hire Franklin. Plus if you look at our history of hiring coaches we have always went bargain hunting.
He turned us down because we wouldn't come up with the money. Boosters didn't want to write the check.
4. The UCF fan reaction has been interesting. It seems that a large portion of fans are happy with his departure. Can you explain the frustrations with Heupel?
Yeah, Heupel’s departure is being seen as a win-win. UCF fans are looking at the regression from 12-1 to 10-3 to 6-4 and thinking the ship is sinking. It’s more complicated than that. But I think the real source of frustration was the fact that Heupel’s UCF teams were 2-7 in games decided by one score, and when your expectations are to win The American and contend for a NY6 bowl and *maybe* perhaps a playoff spot, those coin-flip games will drive you nuts. But former players have also expressed their happiness with the change. One complaint I’ve heard is that Josh didn’t really have a scheme to his offense — he just called plays and hoped they’d work. When teams got pressure on the passer, it did at times look like UCF was going the wrong way through a revolving door. Go watch the second half of the Tulsa game this year and you’ll see what I mean.
Those fans are clueless and spoiled. They think going 13-0 / 12 -1 is a normal thing for teams every yearThat's not the most encouraging thing I've read.
Heupel has a better track record than Pruitt, Dooley, Kiffin, and even Butch Jones before being hired, but he's still an unknown quantity to some extent. Hope this isn't true.
My biggest concern is his defenses. Seems like the typical Air Raid offense that scores a bunch of points, but D struggles. He's going to have to have a functional D to win in the SEC. He's also going to have to recruit at a very high level. You can't get #20 ranked classes and win the SEC.
