Two Keys to Beating WVA

I wish Pruitt the best and I'm certain he's an exceptional DB coach , but don't forget Georgia and Fromm had 232 passing yards in the National championship game against Bama who had 4 and 5 star DB's .

Uhh if I remember correctly Alabama's secondary was riddled with injuries and even had to play a WR as a CB during the National Championship game.

P.S. I hate Alabama so I'm not sticking up for them just making a point that Pruitt's secondary was obliterated by the NC game.

It was the linebacker position that was riddled with injuries. Trevon Diggs played receiver as a freshman but was converted to DB but didn't play much last season. He returned punts in the NC game. However, we did start a former walk-on at cornerback in Levi Wallace.

There's two ways for Pruitt's Vols to take down WVA.

Offensively:

Score many points.

Defensively:

Allow fewer points.

Simple.

There's two ways for Pruitt's Vols to take down WVA.

Offensively:

1. Run game

Whoever starts at QB whether it be JG or Chryst will not have to be prolific but only a game manager. WVA's rush defense ranked 103 in the nation (sadly that'd 22 spots above ours). I think Tim Jordan will be starting but splitting a good amount with Chandler. I'm not sure if London will get a big role but I'm sure he'll get some carries. I think Jordan will be the X-factor and I predict he will have a big game. That will ultimately take the load off of whichever QB that starts.

Defensively:

1. Pass rush

Our pass rush last year was nonexistent and we ranked 90+ in the nation in sacks. We have to rattle Grier to win. We know their passing game is top notch and last year and the previous years, our pass defense was suspect at best. Even with the exceptional DB coach that Pruitt is, our DBs can only improve so much and our depth is thin with experience. There is a lot of hype with their offense and we need to make them go back to the drawing boards, second guessing themselves. Another interesting stat was that WVA ranked 115+ in turnovers lost. So, create pressure and they'll turn it over.

Didn't proofread so sorry for grammar and spelling.

Run Game Absolutely, wear them down defensively and control the clock/limit their possessions.

Pass Rush/Confuse Offense with different looks, schemes, blitzes...keep um guessing and when they guess wrong, lose yards and/or the ball.

Pretty sure Kyriq McDonald was replaced by a starting WR during the NC game when he collapsed on the sidelines.

Edit: Could be wrong though.

Yeah, wasn't him. He's a true freshman that didn't see any action last season. Hootie Jones was a safety who was hurt in the barner game and was replaced by Dionte Thompson, another safety.

I don't think it's far fetched axcording to the type of running game that CJP seems to be designing and recruiting. Chandler has the biggest potential and we've seen flashes of game changing playmajing ability but he'll have to establish himself between the tackles. I think he'll need to work on it before he becomes a true 3 down back. Jordan/London, imo, will get the workhorse carries. Also, Jordan didn't look bad in the spring or in practice. There's no indication that another back is the clear cut workhorse. Unless you make the case for London who has had some success for another division 1 school.

Jordan will most likely be the 3rd guy in the RB committee this year unless Banks comes in ready to play.

I agree and my number three is absolutely controlling the clock. We have at least 3 capable runninbacks in Jordan, Chandler, and London. Have them run 80% of the plays of the game and alternate in and out to keep them fresh. If it's needed have four runs on four downs. Let the play clock go down to five before every snap and wear out the defenders in the middle by running into them every play. The breaks will come and when they do, take them. Force West Virginia into a low scoring, ugly game and beat them. On defense sell out for the pass and blitz whenever possible. If we do these things and can average 3 to 4 yards a carry and only pass when needed, while using guarantano to run when needed, we will win this game with a few breaks.

Well then... we care NOT. :snoring:

In my opinion, we need to posture our DBs the way Jancek did against Alabama in his last season as UT DC. Have to hand it to Jancek... that was probably the best defensive gameplan that Alabama saw that season, and we semi-effectively contained their pass game with far inferior players.

Anything will be better than having to sit through that GA Tech game last year. I’m glad we won, but something about watching a team rush for 700 yards on your defense is somewhat deflating. Still can’t believe we stopped them on that 2pt conversion.

Can you post a pic of what you’re talking about

If our offensive line can actually block I think we can hang in there. West Virginia is generally pretty neglectful when it comes to defense. I'm pretty excited about that grad transfer he might just give us the needed steel in the trenches which will make a huge difference, especially against mid level teams like WVU.

Brandon Kennedy, Trey Smith, Drew Richmond, Chance Hall, Jack Jones, Jeremy Carvin

If we have those guys healthy and ready for game 1, we will be able to run the ball

Last years OC wasn't an OC, our O line was injured

Oline + OC = W over WVU

Mike, Jack Jones left football last year. Career-ending injury. He's a VFL, but no longer a Volunteer football player. Sorry to have to break it to you.

But he got Brandon Kennedy correct (well, so it seems) !

We have a nice variety of running back’s. We will probably try to use the bigger backs, try to stay ahead on down and distance, and control TOP by pounding the rock. If that’s not working then you’re likely to see more of Chandler because he can get yards on his own. I also see Chandler becoming our 3rd down back.

I Expect miss direction etc. to keep the WV linebackers and corners looking in the back field. Then when we throw I expect us to throw long and try to get our moneys worth. On third and long I expect us to find the TE like in the spring game.

I don’t think our staff thinks we will have a lot of long scoring drives in this game, but they will want to control field position. WV will be more conservative in the passing game when on their end of the field. That will make them easier to defend.

As everyone has said, the objective being to keep WV’s offense off the field.

On D we will play the run first to make them one dimensional. Then bring a variety of blitzes to get them behind on down and distance. Yes, the same way Bama does it. They will make Grier read the D and keep him confused. Playing in his own end, with a few sacks. Next thing you know he is reading blitz when it isn’t coming and getting out of sinc with his receivers, scrambling and dumping the ball.

Or it may be they run all over us, then pass us silly. In this case we better hope we find a QB.

I expect our secondary will improve drastically over last year but not by Q1 of that game.
