Alright, my daughter broke my 36in Sony Wega Trinitron that i loved so dearly. So, my wife and I are in the market for a new tube. We are looking at a 50" Pioneer Elite HD PureVision Plasma TV (Pioneer PRO1140 and a Panasonic 50" High Definition 1080P Plasma Television (Panasonic TH50PZ77) does anyone on here know enough about these two tv's to make a good recommendation? They are around the same price, probably going to pick one up friday. Please advise.

Thanks,
Mike

Both are great. I would lean towards the Pioneer though. I have a two year old Panasonic. Read up on the contrast and other specs and compare the two. You are definitely heading in the right direction.

What scares me the most about the Pioneer is the fact that it is a floor model. The tube looks great, no scratches anywhere but I worry about how long it has been left on. Electronic Express is going to give me a full warranty on it though. I am leaning more towards the Elite to. But, the Panasonic is 1080p (whatever that means) we just want a tv to put in the den for sporting events, so i doubt we would ever utilize the 1080p anway.

Does any channels even air on 1080 yet?

sure. didn't see your model, but, you never know. Also, makes you wonder if the shipping costs are in place to offset the deals. Then again, I always heard that shipping Plasmas was a very delicate process.

I wonder if these TV's are refurbished or returned? Kinda like to see what I am buying before dropping a grand on the internet. Either way, good link!

Pioneer and Panasonic pretty much are the two best plasma makers today (excluding hard to find and way expensive Fujitsu). Pioneer Kuros are widely considered the best picture available today. They have stopped making these, though, and sold the technology to Panasonic.

Point is, you can't go wrong with either. The only place you can go wrong is buying cables or a wall-mount at the store instead of monoprice.com. Reason being you'll be taking it up the rear with in-store prices.

I have the Pioneer 5050 HD Plasma - it's about 3 generations old now and still looks fantastic. It's still among the best I've seen in people's homes even compared to some newer generations (mostly LCD).

I also agree that Panasonics are excellent as well. For the ones of my generation (2004 or 2005), the Pioneer had a bit more pop or vividness in the colors than the Panny but both had excellent and realistic pictures.

Personally, I like the plasma picture better than the LCD picture.

My Samsung LED DLP blows them both away.

Also, to answer the question "Does anyone broadcast in 1080?" The answer is, YES, but it is 1080i. Not 1080p.

Operative word, "blows" :p
Jealous.

Good call on Cnet... also AVSForum has a broad base of interested audio/videophiles that should be familiar with any type of device you are looking at.

Also, a plasma isn't a "tube" technically speaking. :) :p

I don't think this can be stressed enough

picture is better yes, but it depends on the brightness of the room and the location of the tv

I have both and the plasma is in the brighter room - it doesn't have the anti-glare screen but I've still never had a problem with brightness or glare.

Just my experience but I would choose plasma again and again.

Thanks for everyones advice and insight.

I wish i new what was that matter with the sony tv. My daughter turned it off the other day and now it will not come back on, the power standby light flashes four times then three times. The manual says that it is a service code and to seek a qualified sony tech. The TV is still in great shape, would like to put it in a bedroom. Any of you guru's got advice on what could be the problem with it?
