TV help

This place has an answer to everything if you can find it.

Truly a great resource for getting AV product info.

I'm a regular there in their PS and XBOX boards. Some good folks over there. I always hit up their displays boards when I'm shopping for something new or helping others make a choice. Lots of geeks that love talking about their toys.

Get the Elite, and look for somebody in your area that does ISF calibrations. You will not be disappointed. Also, Pioneer Elite has pretty much the best manufacturer warranty evar. They cover everything. So don't worry about it.

I almost want to say that it's inarguable that the Elites are the best TV displays available to consumers anywhere. Fujitsu, as mentioned, is close, but their products have had a long history of unreliability. And they're hard to find. And expensive.

I just wanted to bump this up to say thanks for the advice given here. I have finally decided to make to plunge into HDTV. I used the resources suggested in this thread in my decision making.

I looked at the cnet reviews and the AVS forums (which makes this place look very small and easy to navigate). The Pioneer Kuro looked very tempting, but I ended up going with the Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ800U. Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ800U Flat-panel TV reviews - CNET Reviews

I really wanted to find it at a store locally, but my searching proved fruitless. I had dealt with Newegg in the past, so I ended up ordering it from there. I just had to power through my original hesitancy to have a plasma shipped. A lot of people on the AVS forum didn't seem to think it was a big deal and Newegg has a good return policy.

I am psyched. Now to find a mounting arm...

Just figure out how you want it to move and buy a mount rated to handle that TV's weight.

Great choice of TV. I have a 37" Panasonic plasma, and for what it's worth, best "bang for the buck TV" brand out there. Affordable but still great quality. If you're just flat-out looking for the best TV you can get, that's Pioneer. Especially the Elite, with a combination of the best display in the world (pretty much fact at this point) and the crazies warranty in the industry. If you have an Elite, you can practically throw a baseball at the screen and Pioneer will replace it for you.

Also, on the wall mount, make sure you get cables with wall-rated insulation. If you have a house fire for any reason, god forbid, you can get nailed on insurance for not having wall-rated cables. Just FYI.

Grats! Enjoy your new idiot box!

Thanks for the great info, man. Enjoy your trip.

shouldn't you stand in front of it? or better yet, sit in front of it? would seem to enhance the viewing experience.

Wide viewing angles, plus I wanted to mount it on a swivel arm.
I have yet to understand the fascination with mounting a TV on or in the wall. My dad and brother did the same thing.

I got a TV 10-20 inches bigger, for half the price. :dunno:

I'm just taking my anti-flat TV aggression out on you Vader. :) Good for you for joining the HD age! If you watch TV half as much as my wife and I do, you'll thoroughly enjoy your new investment.

OK, glad I saw this. My old-school big screen's screen is on the fritz x 2-3 days. It will flicker, then disintegrate into a narrow horizontal distorted picture with obious RGB lines. The picture also responds to a firm "whack" on the side of the TV. I'm thinking about upgrading to a newer plasma/DLP, but wouldn't mind fixing this one as well. Sound like a problem anyone else has experience with?

I got a 40" Samsung LCD 1080p and love it.

There are just so many choices out there, it is really crazy and overwhelming if you don't have a clue and don't know what you want.

I did find it a bit overwhelming. That is the main reason I went with cnet's editor's choice in the size I wanted.
