Give me a break. Trump and his administration have lied more in one year than any administration in modern history. It was his strategy from the beginning. He knows he can lie, offer "alternative" facts, deflect, and vilify his detractors, and leave the rest up to the right wing media and his core will remain faithful.

It's counter to his narrative that he was elected solely on the merits of his greatness. Granted, he may very well have been elected without Russian meddling, because Clinton was an equally awful candidate. Regardless, a narcissist like Trump cannot leave open the possibility that anything other than his greatness had an influence.

On top of that, Putin has said nice things about him, and everyone knows that if you feed his ego, Trump will like you and give you the benefit of the doubt. That's why he's so easily manipulated, both positive and negative. You can bait him into most anything.
