Here's a strange idea... How about everyone start treating one another with dignity and respect and stop excusing behavior because it's "not quite as bad" as whomever you want to compare yourself to?

I would say this was playing to their audience. I doubt many of the audience disliked the comments; and as gcb pointed out they weren't bad comments. they didn't go after his history, which they could have; they asked people not to boo him, they could have egged it on or not said anything; they showed hope that he would change and be a good politician/person, instead of instantly turning to hate or saying "Not my VP".
