My reaction to Calhoun...there goes big time recruits.
Put yourself in the mind of a 17 year old, 5 star recruit that isn't an orange-blooded Vol. Are you really going to choose to play for Troy Calhoun or Urban Meyer who has won 2 National Titles? Or Saban who has 2 National Titles?
I'm not saying we have to get a coach that has already won a national title, I'm realistic. Getting that type of coach is impossible. But I'd like to at least have a coach that will excite recruits. Hate him or....well we all hate him, but Kiffin excited recruits because of who he was and his staff around him. I love the Vols with all my heart, but I would chose to play for Urban over Calhoun because of the possibility of winning a title. Not to play for some "nobody."
The most evidence off complete ignorance on this board is the "Hire Kippy" thread.
Before reacting too negatively about the Calhoun news (or whoever ends up being our coach), please remember how many reacted to the Coach Pearl hiring:
Pearl who?
Never coached a major school.
Will never be able to recruit in the south.
Never heard of him.
HOnestly. This is ridiculous. Now they are saying Calhoun is not coming. What we don't know is if he was even offered. ESPN put our short list together, but that doesn't mean that we've even talked to any of these guys. I think we did try to get Muschamp, but I think all of the rest is just speculation by a bunch of people. Hamilton is probably talking to someone that isn't even being mentioned. If you think about it, Kiffin wasn't mentioned in conjunction with the TN job last year, with the exception of a few people on this board, until he was hired.
apples and oranges. This is a hiring decision, not a matter of needing to get rid of a guy who is going to take some of his toys with him when he leaves. Anyone with a brain knows that UTK has access through alumni and former coaches to put together a patchwork of experienced guys who can serve as caretakers until they get someone with the gravitasse befitting the program. I have nothing against TC. This is more a case of "it's not you, it's me". The UT Vols that I know do not hire the Air Force coach. It's elitist and smug, I know. But it's a fact and if this guy is hired then the prestige of the program will instantly go down a notch or two.People said that about Buzz, do not fire him, we will lose recruits.
Any one that looks at his resume will think the same. Look where Meyer started his college coaching career.
Calhoun has NFL experience BEFORE college.
