I think he's the best we have left. I'll take Calhoun over Cut right now.
Who else are we going to hire? There is NO ONE else interested. No Muschamp, no Patterson, no Peterson, etc...
This guy may seem boring, but he'll be a winner.
I'm in favor for either him or Kippy, but Kippy has zero experience as a HC at any level (save for the XFL), so I favor Calhoun.
He's not my first choice, or 2nd, or 3rd, or 4th--but he'll do, and I'm not too terribly upset.
My reaction to Calhoun...there goes big time recruits.
Put yourself in the mind of a 17 year old, 5 star recruit that isn't an orange-blooded Vol. Are you really going to choose to play for Troy Calhoun or Urban Meyer who has won 2 National Titles? Or Saban who has 2 National Titles?
I'm not saying we have to get a coach that has already won a national title, I'm realistic. Getting that type of coach is impossible. But I'd like to at least have a coach that will excite recruits. Hate him or....well we all hate him, but Kiffin excited recruits because of who he was and his staff around him. I love the Vols with all my heart, but I would chose to play for Urban over Calhoun because of the possibility of winning a title. Not to play for some "nobody."
What kind of chance are you talking about? You wanna give him a pass on this year and let him start from scratch with the class of 2011? Or since so many of the elite prospects for the 2011 class are already comitted and kids will want to see what his teams do on the field should we just give him a pass until the 2012 class?
If you believe what some of the prospects and EEs are saying, hiring TC is going to cost the program guys who are ready and willing to come here. The second Hambone announces this guy it IS going to hurt recruiting NOW. People understand that UTK got hosed. They will not hold it against us nearly so much for going into the bunker and letting one of our own take the helm short term (or maybe long term if he surprises us). What will hurt UTK is if they are percieved as making an unnecessary, panic hire and hiring the Air Force coach will give that perception. Some of you are obviously already sold. Others are probably just trying to be positive and get out in front of what you expect to happen. I'm just here to say that we have no idea what the upside on this guy is. Maybe he's the next Saban. What we do know is the downside. Kids will leave school and decommit if TC is hired. I'll take a bird in the hand right now, thanks.
