Troy Calhoun (merged)

Another panic-induced knee jerk hire. It could have been worse, but it could have been much better too. Given his relative lack of experience with big time programs, I would think he would have incentive to stick around and put his all into making a name for himself at UT. I am on board.

I'm sure we'll be very proud of the good, disciplined UT boys who are getting the butts kicked every saturday by*the bad boys at florida, bama, georgia and others.

Not only is that not fair, it is a really ignorant thing to say.

Hey.....quick post here from someone in the AD's office at UT....Calhoun isn't the guy....look at Leach from Texas Tech, and Chan Gailey....those are the two names that have been thrown around the most here.

Chan Gailey was an absolute disaster at Georgia Tech. They wanted to run him out of town on a rail. He lost to Georgia with boring consistency.

Are you serious? I just got on Wiki to read more about Gailey and I'm impressed. He's been around, I like him off his resume at least.

No it's been posted if he is hired most of the recruits we still have will leave.rush hire if true and it will haunt Ut for years to come.get a lil guppie for a big fish conference !!!!!just horrible

His resume sure beats the one of the last coach Tennessee hired.

Exactly!

I think it's a good hire and a step in the right direction towards getting not only the program back to the top of the SEC, but getting the attitudes changed down there as well.

do not believe a post you put up vowarrior33. u post as u know the truth ..u dont know squat..one day u may be right but no one will believe u chicken little

Tim Brando's reaction (per Twitter):

No axe to grind with anyone, but UT fans don't get it. Your AD is responsible for this. Air Forces offense in the SEC? Ok, change in 4 years.

@CrimsonMama Derek Dooley would have been a great hire. He just was a little to beyond the obvious, and knowing background's never in play!

Before reacting too negatively about the Calhoun news (or whoever ends up being our coach), please remember how many reacted to the Coach Pearl hiring:

Pearl who?

Never coached a major school.

Will never be able to recruit in the south.

Never heard of him.

He can't even keep the recruits already in the bag!

He want hire the assistants we already have picked out?!

etc, etc.

I do not think Hamilton is interested in the EASY pick. He is brave enough to go after the RIGHT pick. (I know what you are thinking: was Kiff the right pick?!).

I am just saying, let's give this guy a chance, and if it is Calhoun, we need to remember that he has coached a lot more than just the wishbone or whatever. I don't think that is happening at Tennessee.

I will back whatever coach we get, but there's no reason to trust in MH right now. Hamilton has proven with his Kiffin hire that there is no reason to believe he can make a good football hire.

1. Unlike Kiffin he does not have ties to another program he will leave us for. He could be here for 10 years even if he is tremendously successful.

2. He has a military background. I want him to grow sideburns, but out last military head coach got a stadium named after him.

3. He actually seems like a great person. People can mock St. Richt all they want, but combine being a great person with caring a great deal about discipline? We could be proud of our players and program and know that our coach is someone we would be proud for our sons to grow up to be like.

4. He can do a heck of a lot more than run the option. He can run a pro style offense, and he did that as an offensive coordinator in the pros.

5. I trust Mike Hamilton[/B]. Resisting Peyton Manning and lots of Fulmer players is great at this point because Cutcliffe has health problems and is not the right age to build something special. Mike knows his job is on the line. He was pressured with the Buzz firing and he hired Bruce Pearl. Home run. Was not a "name" hire. He was pressured before about lots of guys and Kiffin was a good-great hire that people thought was bad. He has no character and he shafted us, but he did work hard and recruit well.

Kiffin was all sizzle no steak. Carpenter should be able to help train Calhoun on the sizzle piece, but the man is full of substance. He is not relying on his daddy, he is his own man.

Yea, based on his last hire, we couldn't help but fully trust his judgement on hiring a football coach. He lucked out on Pearl. If this is true, we can forget about competing with the elite teams in this conference, but should be able to compete with Miss. State, Ky, Vandy, and hopefully Ole Miss. This hire will not excite the fan base. Someone needs to be developing a list of possible AD replacements.

I myself, would much rather have Chan Gailey that Troy Calhoun.

Gailey's record at GT. He never beat Georgia.

2002 Georgia Tech 7-6 4-4 5 (tied) L Silicon Valley Classic — —
2003 Georgia Tech 7-6 4-4 4 (tied) W Humanitarian Bowl — —
2004 Georgia Tech 7-5 4-4 6 (tied) W Champs Sports Bowl — —
2005 Georgia Tech 7-5 5-3 3 (Coastal) L Emerald Bowl — —
2006 Georgia Tech 9-5 7-1 1 (Coastal) L Gator Bowl — —
2007 Georgia Tech 7-6 4-4 3 (Coastal) L Humanitarian Bowl
Georgia Tech: 44-32 28-20

You think that I haven't lurked this place forever!? I never felt like I was in a position to post on the board with the work that I do for the University...but I feel like this is important, so I posted. Screw you, man.

Hey my buddy is saying Stoops is a possibility. He's an OU alum with close ties. Any truth to that?
As an OSU fan. I would love it.

FYI

Calhouns team beat, no wait, SHUT OUT Wyoming a few months ago with a fraction of the tallent we had in 2008....... :whistling: just sayin'

The Sports Monster here in the Tri-Cities is also reporting Troy Calhoun as the new head coach at UT.

We'll be fine. I'm not crazy about the guy but he does have a history of getting superior results with sub par talent. I'm sure he knows a little more about integrity and commitment than our previous coach also. I would have been just as good with Kippy as HC but this is a lot better than Cutliffe IMO. Players need someone they can believe right now, this might just be the guy.
