The Inside Read: Buzz on Alabama, Chip Kelly, Tennessee

TENNESSEE
Coaches we’ve spoken with think Tennessee has hit home runs with its defensive moves — and it is not sure at all what to make of the offensive changes.

Promoted offensive coordinator Larry Scott’s inexperience in that role is part of the mystery, but so is the addition of quarterbacks coach Mike Canales. The 55-year-old has not had a Power 5-level job since 2006, when he was at Arizona.

Multiple industry sources echoed what we thought: Butch Jones’ insistence on being heavily involved in the offensive gameplan was a detractor on the open market.

“If he can’t tell you that you’re ‘the guy’, then why would you go there and be constantly overruled?” one Power 5 OC said. “What’s the point of being a coordinator? The money, I guess, but that’s about it.”

Overall instability was a factor, as well, but the defensive hires indicate that alone could be overcome.

We’ve been told by those close to the program that DC Bob Shoop was given influence in the hires of secondary coach Charlton Warren and defensive line coach Brady Hoke.

Shoop would be on notice in his second season — but, as one source reminded us, “they’re all on notice there.”

Seems about in line with what most have said. CBJ wants to own the offense - and its hard to blame him too much when he has the stats from the last season. On Defense, however, he is acting more like a CEO coach, getting who he thinks is best person and letting them run with it and get their own people.

If CBJ can repeat most of the O's success and Shoop can get the D up to snuff (and keep them healthy), this fall could be a more pleasant surprise. And, yes, I know Dobbs is gone and a lot depends who is under center.

I can't stand Butch Jones. If he wants to be successful he needs to hire excellent assistants and let them do their jobs. This insistence on being the authority on the offense will probably lead to his downfall. Great head coaches know you hire great assistants and let them do their job.

Wait and see how his assistants do first before bashing Butch. We haven't seen them do their job yet so it's pretty pointless to make assumptions.

This all makes sense to me. Defensive hires look great. The jury is out on the offensive hires.

And I'm still in the camp that sees the offense as a bigger problem than the defense. Defense was spectacular through the first few games of the season. It only started to break down after a boatload of injuries that would've crippled any team. Offense came on at the end of the season, but created so many issues with turnovers and penalties. It looks nice to put up a high PPG, but when you constantly give the other team the ball and let them score off of turnovers, it's sort of misleading. Winning the turnover battle is vital when you're a spread offense team.

That said, I'm optimistic about Larry Scott. He's a risk, obviously, since he hasn't been an OC before, but neither had David Cutcliffe when he became our OC. I'm much happier to take a chance on Scott than to bring in some mediocre "experienced OC". As for Canales and Wells ... I just don't know. Canales has a weird resume. He coached Phillip Rivers at NC State, but has bounced around otherwise w/o showing anything too particularly impressive. However, he was OC at a lot of the stops rather than merely focusing on QBs.

Biggest hire IMO was S&C coach. That was our biggest downfall in 2016. Our S&C fell off a cliff!

I give Butch credit, though, for making tough changes (Martinez needed to go; ditto for Mahoney after 2016).
I'm hopeful. The offense works, but we need more discipline (less turnovers and penalties). The defense has a very good staff now; if we can stay healthy, we can be good.

There are many head coaches who take control over either offense or defense, it isn't unusual. You cannot really argue with the results either the last couple of seasons, with the exception of the first couple of games last year. We will find out if it was all Dobbs this coming season.

The VQ guys said Mahoney appeared to be disgruntled.
Said we should expect another 247 story using "Anonymous coaches" soon.

I'm sure Mahoney is a great likable guy but if he worked for anyone else besides Butch he would have been let go long ago. He should be happy with the time and money he got and move on to his next endeavor.

Deja vu and memories of days gone by, how we love them.

I remember when buTch hired Mike DeBord as our new OC and this place went nuts, LOL!

He's too old, buTch just trying to help a old friend make some money, why hire a guy that had a job making sure the swimming pool had enough water in it, blah, blah, blah.

Despite all the drama and BS with Hurd and a injured O line that played musical chairs moving O linemen around all over the place just to play the game all buTch and DeBord did last season was to set some new records in the UT record books.

If we're all being totally honest and we were buTch we would do the exact same things to make certain our O was run like we want it run for 1 reason...it works well most of the time.

I'm old school so I like the old times knock them on their butts, smashmouth footVol too.

Then I also have to remind myself that Dabo and Clemson runs the same O as buTch runs...Hmmmmm.

I think Dabo and Clemson just beat nick saTan and the alaBubba crimson Turd and WON the National Championship.

Winning Championships is exactly what I want my Vols to be doing too so if Clemson can do that then why not my Vols using the same O?

Get it all together buTch because we damn sure are watching!

VFL...GBO!!!

Some people want to bash Butch Jones every chance they get. I think it's okay to be critical, but he also deserves credit when credit is due. Our offense wasn't the real problem last year. I know we sucked at South Carolina and barely beat Appalachian State and Ohio and the second half of Vanderbilt was pitiful. We also scored a ton of points. If that happened because Butch Jones has a heavy hand on the offensive side of the ball then I don't think it's a bad idea if he has the heavy hand on the offense for the coming seasons. Our defense was terrible and Butch Jones made some pretty good hires. I am by no means confident that we will dominate next year but I do believe Butch is getting a little too much hate from some people. Forgive any grammar mistakes because I am using text-to-speech. Flame away

So Saban just sets back and lets the D coordinator do his thing.

Agree,Mahoney may be suffering from a case of butt hurtitis. Anyone hates to lose a good paying job. Hopefully Wells will be able to substitute OL with no drop off in performance. Coaching matters.

The CLS promotion is good. He's unproven but has the intangibles for success and has a frame work in place to help him transition to coordinator. The Canales hire was a botch. He will probably be serviceable, but we couldn't do better ? The defensive changes should help greatly in recruiting and I'm a believer in Hoke as a position coach, and with a place like Knoxville to recruit to Warren should also do well.

We should have outbid the niners for Kyle Shanahan as OC! We could have held some bake sales to help defray the additional costs.

Bill belichick does the same thing with his defense.... Yea I know butch hasn't had the success but you can't be mad at him for the way he runs it but you can the production and based on production... Well I don't have a problem with it either... Wide recievers coaching is a different story but not the offensive system...

If CBJ gets canned next year (big if), then hopefully the AD will keep the key cogs on D for the new head coach...especially Shoop, Warren and Hoke...either of which would make a great interim head coach as well.

And we need to go after Fuentes with big bucks in tow!

I get it if he's mad but he need not to walk around like he drew the short straw or was asked to jump on the mine.

It'd be a real kick in the nads if Bama ends up with Helfrich.

At least Jones appeased Scott and bought another year of loyalty from him. Plus he gets to give a job to another buddy sliding down the career ladder in Canales.

This may be a 3 star offensive staff but they have 5 star hearts.

Dude, you rattled off a quarter of the season almost that the offense "sucked" LOL

It was statistically good but the ceiling was much much higher, especially with seeing some of the draft projections on Kamara and Dobbs coming in. Those guys had a lot of wasted opportunity under this staff.
