Trade Wars and Tariffs

Interesting issue is whether the companies that upped their prices to pay for the tariffs, thereby passing them on to the consumers, get to keep the refunds. I cannot think of a mechanism that forces them to pay it back to the consumers.

We all got taxed. The companies now get the windfall. We just paid higher prices for no reason. Good job, Donnie.

😳 Wait… so they DID pay those tariffs after all?

Maybe the traders of domestic company equities are expecting a windfall on future import prices. The companies that could be the biggest beneficiaries of refunds (if it happens) might just be the foreign manufacturers and those with the non-domestic manufacturing footprints. The retailers and tech companies might not be the beneficiaries of refunds. The importers would be refunded.

That’s an awfully long winded way to just say “yes” 🤷‍♂️

Yeah I wasn’t gonna watch but it’s must see TV now 😂
Me either. But I’ll watch for a few minutes now just for the explosion. Got a feeling it won’t take long to see it. Wonder how he’s going to tout his economic plan when one of the foundations just got blown to smithereens.

Now now. Who’s being overly emotional now?

I don’t care about Trump. But I like many of his policies of putting American first.

The administration has known the probable outcome for many months. No doubt there are alternatives to achieving the ultimate goals are already planned. More good jobs in the US after building new state of the art manufacturing facilities. Gaining more control over supply chains. Leveraging access to US consumers to gain an equal footing with countries ripping us off. To name a few.

We’ve seen zero evidence Trump thinks beyond his next midnight dump on when he sets foreign economic policy so no I don’t think he’s got any counter plan ready to roll out

Got to think it through but certainly Trump will promote that even more. Probably get some mention in the SOTU.

If lower rates trickle down to bond auctions, then those savings would help with the deficits. But market forces determine interest rates rather than the overnight rate. However I don’t put a lot of effort into understanding the nature of how interest rates adjust. Rather than helping the budget directly they’re probably more impactful with things like mortgage rates which affect housing/construction.

Agree. I don’t think he plans more than 12 hours in advance. Throws multiple piles of 💩 against the wall to see if anything sticks. Then throw out the next bright shiny object to distract from the failures.

This one would seem different though since the tariffs have been touted so much and so often. It’s all Trump has wanted to talk about for years. Watch for a huge bright shiny object over the weekend to attempt to distract from this bombshell.

On social media, the left is all giddy over the USSC ruling and liberal media is stoking it.....another fail incoming for the left

Oh yeah, tantrum is incoming.

Why shouldnt the consumers get the refunds? The court basically called it a tax , right? The consumers paid , so the refunds should go to us. The sellers already got their money and the odds of much in the way of falling prices in the future seems very low at best.
So when will the tariff checks be mailed? Call your congressman.
