While I disagree with Canadian tariffs, tariffs do work. It was the Foundation of the modern US Economy. Go read about Alexander Hamilton and how USA had a tariff system he started that lasted over 100 years and financed our government pre Federal Income Tax and help develop local industry.
I also see the Chinese tariffs are helping to save manufacturing by forcing companies to build here. So yes it works. I just don't understand the Canada tariffs (although that has mostly been bluster as very little tariffs have actually been applied to date).
I'm not sure the old rules apply today. Things are so different now that I struggle to see the benefits these will have.
Tariffs today are on top of income taxes, sales tax, property tax etc. they essentially work as a national sales tax or somewhat similar to a value added tax like the socialists have in Europe.
Tariffs are unlikely to bring back the "good jobs" we've lost. Companies are struggling today to fill openings. A massive retirement waive of baby boomers has already put a spotlight on the falling birth rates we've experienced in recent years. More people are leaving the workforce than are coming of age and joining the workforce. Couple that with immigration crackdowns and we have a problem brewing in the future already.
Unless we are going to bring the Chinese workers here with the new factories, a sudden influx of new jobs to the USA with our limited labor pool would spark a wage war among companies and lead to catastrophic inflation.
China has a major problem of their own brewing. Their one child policy has left them with a population that is heavily skewed toward the elderly. Right now a huge percentage of young workers are being drawn into the elder care workforce. With a manufacturing worker population that is entering late-middle age, it's a bit scary to think about how we'll obtain the things we buy regularly today 20 years from now.
It's absurd to think that our politicians are capable of looking past their next opportunity the get re-elected but lest pretend we live in a fantasy world. What are some solutions?
I'm not sure there's a way to convince people to have more kids.
Drastically ramp up legal, controlled immigration.
Look for new trade partners...and I mean a lot of them. China's massive labor pool will not be replaced by a handful of countries. We'll need to scour the globe.
The only area with enough young workers to fill that void in one swoop would be sub-sarahan Africa. But the problem is you're dealing with multiple countries, poor infrastructure and a lot of corruption.
The wildcard is AI/automation. That may be what saves our bacon. Usually I think it's smarter to bet on the innovation of American people than American politicians
