Trade Wars and Tariffs

Victims of gun violence are aware of what's happening? A 4yo recently shot and killed himself and I doubt he knew what was happening

The fact is there are zero fent deaths without people taking the chance with illegal drugs. Might as well be 43lbs of baby powder until it's voluntarily ingested

I'm for them to be legalized. Almost all of this mess is a direct byproduct of the biggest war loss in US history. Let's stop trying to "win" it and at the same time pretend to care people are dying. Frankly, it's insulting
I was talking about people voluntarily participating in using guns or drugs.

But yes being careless with either you are putting yourselves and or others in danger.

I tend to agree now. My thoughts have changed over the years.

If you didn’t know better, you might think this is a great investment opportunity for wealthy people in the know. Announce tariffs, buy shares at deflated prices; suspend tariffs, sell shares after the rebound

I'm not wealthy but I picked up shares of NVIDIA early afternoon.

I believe that's enough to kill about 10 million Americans.

This isn't marijuana we're talking about.
So would the 21,000 lbs seized at the southern border kill the universe? I'd like to really know what the reason is for the Canadian tariffs. If it's fentanyl then what is an acceptable number to remove the tariffs? 20 lbs, zero pounds?

What I gather is a lot of the drugs that are seized at both borders are seized from random searches of legal crossings of US citizens. Aside from some type of drug sniffing dog or some type of detection system I don't know how you police that very well.

Maybe we're just trying to bring the fentanyl production jobs back to he USA

Frequency would be the problem. I haven't seen how often it's happening

Tariffs don't work. Our moron President doesn't know history, so here we are... doing stupid ****.

Tennessee is in the cross hairs of Canada now. But Mexico is next to reciprocate. Guess who will feel the pain here...

Jack Daniel's maker says Canada pulling US alcohol off shelves 'worse than tariff'

While I disagree with Canadian tariffs, tariffs do work. It was the Foundation of the modern US Economy. Go read about Alexander Hamilton and how USA had a tariff system he started that lasted over 100 years and financed our government pre Federal Income Tax and help develop local industry.

I also see the Chinese tariffs are helping to save manufacturing by forcing companies to build here. So yes it works. I just don't understand the Canada tariffs (although that has mostly been bluster as very little tariffs have actually been applied to date).

I'm not sure the old rules apply today. Things are so different now that I struggle to see the benefits these will have.

Tariffs today are on top of income taxes, sales tax, property tax etc. they essentially work as a national sales tax or somewhat similar to a value added tax like the socialists have in Europe.

Tariffs are unlikely to bring back the "good jobs" we've lost. Companies are struggling today to fill openings. A massive retirement waive of baby boomers has already put a spotlight on the falling birth rates we've experienced in recent years. More people are leaving the workforce than are coming of age and joining the workforce. Couple that with immigration crackdowns and we have a problem brewing in the future already.

Unless we are going to bring the Chinese workers here with the new factories, a sudden influx of new jobs to the USA with our limited labor pool would spark a wage war among companies and lead to catastrophic inflation.

China has a major problem of their own brewing. Their one child policy has left them with a population that is heavily skewed toward the elderly. Right now a huge percentage of young workers are being drawn into the elder care workforce. With a manufacturing worker population that is entering late-middle age, it's a bit scary to think about how we'll obtain the things we buy regularly today 20 years from now.

It's absurd to think that our politicians are capable of looking past their next opportunity the get re-elected but lest pretend we live in a fantasy world. What are some solutions?

I'm not sure there's a way to convince people to have more kids.

Drastically ramp up legal, controlled immigration.

Look for new trade partners...and I mean a lot of them. China's massive labor pool will not be replaced by a handful of countries. We'll need to scour the globe.

The only area with enough young workers to fill that void in one swoop would be sub-sarahan Africa. But the problem is you're dealing with multiple countries, poor infrastructure and a lot of corruption.

The wildcard is AI/automation. That may be what saves our bacon. Usually I think it's smarter to bet on the innovation of American people than American politicians

That looks like a run an old friend of mine did for several years. He'd haul empty racks from a GM plant right outside of NYC to Loredo, TX pick up a trailer with full racks, haul them to a GM plant near Montreal then pick up a trailer of parts to haul back to the GM plant in NY. I don't know how many trucks they had making that loop but I always thought that was insane.

It’s ridiculous. Bring it all back to the states. It has to be noted that these tariffs should create jobs in our country and cause job loss in other countries. What will end up being a win for us will be a big loss in more than one way to other countries. I don’t think Mexico or Canada have considered the lasting impact. Sure the USA will have a rough go at first but we will be fine long run.

You'll have to bring the Mexicans to fill those jobs since we're pretty much at full employment level now. And you'll pay those Mexican a much higher wage once they get here. Or build it with automation.

The biggest folly in politics is that both sides think central planning is this easy, and the law of unintended consequences ***** all over your lofty plans, every time.

So you don't trust the free market?

So naive. Things exist for a reason. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Trump's indecisiveness and flip flopping with the timing of the tariffs will continue to have the type of drop in the market that is favorable for the wealthiest cash investors in the market. Earlier this week, I made a move from influence from Buffet. Of course, exponentially less but still a little "chunk" for me
