The best two modern coaches were Walsh and Belichick in some order. And it's a long, long way down to #3.

I have no idea how to compare them to Halas and Lombardi because those two guys might have well have been cavemen clanking rocks together compared to what modern NFL coaches do.

Yup yup. Fame obviously wins out there, but the chances of them being chewed up and spit out in today's game are very high.

Does anybody else think Jimmy Johnson should be on this list?

Is it exclusive to the NFL? Would college resumes be factored in as well?

Maybe he doesn't deserve it on his NFL merits alone, but Marty Schottenheimer? I'd have Jimmy in over him. He's a good coach, but top 20?

Also, LOL at those idiot Chargers. I knew it was a mistake to fire him after a 14-2 season. What a joke.

How in the hell is Walsh not #1? The man changed the way offense was played.

So Walsh who coached up to 1988 is "modern" and Noll who coached up to 1991 isn't?

The two factors that created the modern NFL were the salary cap and Bill Walsh himself. Chuck Noll's success came in the prehistoric era.

Walsh - 3 Super Bowl Wins
Belichick - 3* Super Bowl Wins
Noll - 4 Super Bowl Wins

It's a long way "down" from 3 titles to 4?

Was Terry Bradshaw a greater quarterback than Tom Brady?

The thread is titled "Top 20 coaches of all time"

1979 is "prehistory" and 1981 is "modern"?

Was Terry Bradshaw a greater quarterback than Tom Brady?

Brady wouldn't have the same stats if he played in the era of bump and run coverage. Brady wouldn't have finished a single game if he had to absorb the hits QB's like Bradshaw did instead of being explicitly coddled by the NFL rules of today.
