Last night the NFL Network aired their top ten list of "College Football Factories." Best I can remember, the top 10 schools were:

10. Tennessee
9. The entire MAC conference (BS that a conference makes it on this list)
8. Syracuse (a few stars, but questionable that they are ahead of us here)
7. Penn State
6. Alabama
5. Michigan
4. Ohio State
3. Notre Dame
2. Miami
1. USC

Notable omissions: Texas, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU.

I'm wondering if that is all time or recently because Ala. hasn't had a first round pick since 2000 I think.

If this is based on recent history, there's no way that Syracuse is better than Tennessee at producing NFL players.

Didn't they have a linebacker go to the Texans a year or two ago? I thought Penn St was known for draft flops as much as anything.

Why no first-round draft picks for Alabama?

Here's an interesting question that is bound to get thrown around this week: Why hasn't the University of Alabama had a player drafted in the first round of the NFL draft in the last eight years? Remember 2000? Tackle Chris Samuels was picked third overall and, running back Shaun Alexander went 19th. Since then, crickets...

1.) It's definitely an all time poll.
2.) DeMeco Ryans went to the Texans from Bama.

This list is completely meaningless if FSU isn't even in the top 10.

That surprised me, too, but remember that FSU has really only been producing NFL talent (sans Fred Biletnikoff) since the late 1980's.

Not too long before that it was known for being Burt Reynolds's alma mater and a former women's college.

Yes, I realized that after thinking for a while. It was a great value pick for them, he contributed right away.

It proves combine numbers are worthless.

Demeco was too short and slow to play MLB in the NFL according to his combine.

-I completely agree.

-He was too short for OLB, too small for MLB in some people's eyes (even though he was only a little lighter than Mayo is). Slow was never in there from what I heard. That's why he went to an AFC-South team.. they rely more on speed at all LB positions than size (a lot like the SEC oddly enough). His biggest hit was the fact that no one really gave him much of a look.

Here are his combine stats, and they're pretty darned good:

Ht: 6'1
Wt: 236
40: 4.65
20ss: 4.18
3-cone: 7.19
Vert: 39

Mayo:
Ht: 6'1
Wt: 240
40: 4.54
20ss: 4.29
3-cone: 7.31
Vert: 40.5

But back on track: I think it's BS that Syracuse is ahead of us. Bama might get a nod if it's all time, but I would still have beef with that. If this is only the last 10 years, it shouldn't even be a contest.. we'd lose to Miami, OSU, USC and maybe Texas. Those are just the ones off the top of my head.

Didn't Ryans win the NFL Defensive Rookie of the year the same year him and #1 overall draft pick Mario Williams were on the same squad?

Am I dreaming this?

Also, who has 'Cuse had other than McNabb and Harrison that are players? That Konrad guy that wore #44?

There is so much to question in terms of criteria that it's hard not to start a debate over the rankings.

Even if it's all-time you have to question the quantity vs. quality when you pit us against Syracuse. We have put a lot more players in the pro's, but stars like Brown, McNabb, Csonka, Davis, and Harrison make the Orange(men) had to argue against.

Please tell me you're not throwing Al Davis in there for them?

Yes, he did. I actually bet a co-worker that Ryans would have a better year than Williams. I didn't think he'd do that well...

No, Ernie Davis. The first African-American Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall pick in 1961. Broke all of Jim Brown's rushing record there. He died of leukemia in 1963 at the age of 23, but was supposed to be the next Jim Brown, possibly better.
