You may be onto something there... it wouldn't surprise me at all. Brown and D Williams are the most experienced d linemen we've got, and Martin and Walker probably have the most potential at this point... so it could conceivably be a great combo.

This combination wouldn't have been done in the past but Monte will play with schemes to get the guys on the fieldwho can make the most impact. I'd like to see us use our DL the way that Spagnuolo did at the NYG. Bringing a powerful DE inside on passing downs gives a significant athletic advantage and helps the DTs stay fresh. I actually like our DL rotation even though it is a little thin on the back end.

Another thought I've had is going to a 3-4 formation with D. Williams in the middle, Chris Walker/Wes Brown on the ends and G.Williams and B. Martin as OLBs. The key would be finding tWo other LBs who can drop into pass coverage and mixing up who you blitz. I think that could be a dominant pass-rushing formation.

Wonder why Monte and Kiff weren't there. You stress for people to show up at 5:30 am to see how strong they're working, and then the HC isn't even there? What sense does that make?

Sleeping in after a big night out.

Seriously, though this is why you have a staff. Other guys can run a February workout, I don't see why Lane and Monte would have to be there every morning. Not to mention I think Lane is focused on finalizing this recruiting class and still trying to work the Brown / Oku / Charles / Geathers angle.

the city of pompeii was not destroyed by a volcano,, they were prancing around like homos which sent Coach O into a rage,,

:birgits_giggle: I like that one. Coach O doesn't read the playbook, he just stares it down until he gets the information he wants out of it.....yaw, yaw footbaw.

I agree none of the top dogs(coaches) really needs to be there for all of the workouts... really only the S&C coach needs to be there. This is the time of year that he gets to work the most with the players. Now is the time to earn his pay... during the season... he is trying to keep them healthy... now he breaks them down then builds them up better than before.

Why should they be there? They aren't working out. I'm sure they go but Coach O and Mark Smith can handle. CLK and Monte need to be reviewing video on recruits and players currently on the roster.

Makes sense!

I was under the impression that coaches could not supervise the players workouts until spring practice begins. Only the S&C coach could supervise. Does anyone know if this is correct?

I agree with all except liking our DT line-up... I wish we had another solid, experienced tackle returning... but oh well.

I would think that the Brown at DT combo you mentioned above would also work well against the spread offense, given the speed that it would add, as well as having less threat of a smash-mouth, up the middle attack, where Brown's size would be more of a liability.

It looks bad at first glance but D. Williams, Nelson, Thomas, Langley, Hughes and Walls is a decent rotation at DT. More experience would be nice but Nelson, Thomas and Langley all have some experience. Martin, Brown, Walker, G. Williams, Fowlkes, and Bohannanon is a pretty deep rotation of DEs.

Somone on the VQ board posted:

"someone talked to chris walker and he said that it was a completely different culture and it is a lot harder than before"

haha that was me. I went to high school with chris. He wasn't working out because of some injury to his knee. I actually stuck around after most of the other guys left. About 10 minutes after everyone left Monte came in. He just demands attention from the whole room. Every coach was comin up to talk to him and he was just laughin and jokin around. He seems like a very personable guy. After about five more minutes Lane stepped out on the balcony overlooking the field. I snuck up there like a navy seal and got his autograph. At least after Chaney gave me some guff for being up there...
But CLK is just so overpowering and he comes off so confident, but he is in no way condescending in his speech. I just told him how much I love what he is doing here. I was about to take a picture with him and my camera died on the spot. But I did get his signature on my UT hat from the late 70's. booyah.

was this morning just a one time thing or are all practices going to be open?

If he runs the same type of program like USC does, and I believe he has mentioned that a trillion times, the practices will be open to the public. One thing I've heard Pete Carroll say about open practices is that it creates more of a gameday atmosphere with people watching... It also makes the players practice harder because they don't want to look like they are slacking off in front of the fans. It adds extra accountability.

I agree that the potential is there... but we've had potential for a while and not lived up to it (Fisher & Bolden come to mind). That's why, being greedy, I would prefer more experienced, proven guys. Nelson has looked good when not injured, but he's got the injury bug apparently. Langley got a little action last year, not enough for me to consider him "experienced" though. The other guys could be great, and I hope with Orgeron's coaching they will be.

In fact, other than D Williams, the CEO coaching is the best thing our DTs have going for them now IMO.

I'm not trying to sound like I'm complaining though... I'm optimistic about the group, I think they'll be good.

I agree that the DL recruiting was a little disappointing, but I do have faith in them to generate depth at those positions with solid coaching.

I mean if the offense had kept the ball like 5 minutes more a game, we probably turn 5-7 into 7-5 right there. The defense played hard and very effectively in most cases.

Why doesn't Lane K make morning workouts mandatory? Is that allowed?? Also, can coaches be present at these workouts or just trainers?

I heard that Urban was thinking of changin is name to John Edward to be a more accurate representation.
