Tony Robinson on Dobbs: 'He is a little bit better than I was"

Tony Robinson had a much better arm than Josh Dobbs and was one of the most exciting Vol QB of all time.

I watched that auburn game yesterday. Robinson ran for 38 yards on, I think, our first drive to set up our first TD. He played under center, of course, and our passing game was much better than it is now: we had some good receivers that year.

T-Rob was not a dual threat in that there were a multitude of QB keepers in his play book. He was a dual threat in that if ignored he could be 30 yards downfield in the blink of an eye.

One thing that he did better than about anybody was to roll out to his weak side (the left) and throw the ball on a rope across his body with pinpoint accuracy. It was devastating when his knee was shredded in Alabama on that day in 1985.

Oh yes, he did, little doubt about that IMO, we agree. I just give the nod to Peyton because of the full body of work over a much longer time/total of games. But in terms of pure talent, arm and otherwise? It was TRob.

Shuler and it is really not that close, then TRob, Peyton, and Condrege.

T Rob was very "talented" but is overrated in the minds of a lot of fans.

Comp% 61%. 23 TD 17 int. 187 rush yards, 1.4 ypc

Dobbs:

Comp % 60%. 27TD 18 int. 1400 rush yards, 4.5 ypc 20 TDs

Now for a wild comparison:

Jon Crompton's senior season:

58.3% 2800yds 27TD 13int

Dobbs problem isn't that he isn't good as people think. Dobbs problem is he is better then he thinks. I see him checkoff, and I know he sees the long ball, but he goes to "safe" instead...."safe" by what he feels he can throw accurately, not by coverage. If he believed in his arm as much as he believes in his feet he'd be better.

Imagine Tony Robinson, coached by Spurrier in the fun and gun offense back then.

Records set that may never be broken had that been the case.

This is why stats distort facts. Robinson's throws were much harder to complete. He typically threw down field and never once was credited with a completion by flipping the ball to somebody running a jet sweep. He did throw a lot of screen passes to the flats, but even those throws were about 20 yards.

I like that SI cover. :)

One of my favorites, so fun to watch. Tennessee 38 #1 Auburn 20, and it was not as close as the score would indicate. That was a total beat-down.

I went to that game by water. Believe me when I say the Vol Navy partied after that game!!!

The 4th quarter of this game is my all time favorite. My best friend from my youth was a big Alabama fan and he came up from Montgomery, where he was living at the time, with a couple friends to go to the game with me. I figured we had lost the game going into the 4th quarter and it would take a miracle to win that one - actually, two miracles. There's no way I could expect that. Needless to say, over 3 decades later and I know miracles can happen. (The good part starts at the 55 min mark in this video).

I miss hearing John Ward.

Yeah. He was gifted and a joy to watch.

Not over rated at all, stats can't describe the sweetest, most natural throwing motion ever seen.
