Tony Elliott Appears To Be a Target

I know his offense has shredded the SEC and Clemson has beaten Alabama, Auburn, and Texas A&M multiple times in the last few years. I know he won the Broyles Award for best assistant in the nation, Pruitt never did. I know he's won recruiter of the year. I know Pete Carroll wanted him, so did the Dolphins and Titans. I know the kids that play for him love him. I know he's smart because he has an industrial engineering degree. Neyland also had an engineering degree. I know that Clemson had a bad day on offense without him vs Ohio State. It was the first bad day on offense Clemson has had in a long time. Mostly, if he were hired, I trust he'd be good because I trust White's decision making process at hiring a coach far more than I did Fulmer's.

All that said, I don't know that he'd accept the job here. He's been fairly dismissive of other offers in the last couple of years and has said the situation would have to be exactly right for him to go. He basically said he didn't have much interest in South Carolina back in November.

Thanks for taking the time.

If its all Dabo why has he worked so hard to keep Venables and Elliott? Saban is ok with letting his coordinators walk. Dabo is a cheerleader. Saban is a coach
Dabo’s had four OCs and two DCs. They run the same offense that Chad Morris installed 10 years ago, which is long enough that ACC defensive coordinators should have unlocked it but it still works because of the talent disparity. We saw what happens when Morris tried to install his offense at Arkansas without Clemson talent. It was a disaster, worse than Jeremy Pruitt bad. We don’t have Clemson talent on offense, nowhere close actually, and that’s after three classes with a staff that was built to recruit and allegedly used cash incentives. Whoever comes here next is probably going to have scholarships cut, severe limits on visits, and will have to do things squeaky clean for awhile at least. If we’re going to have any success over the next few years, it is going to come from bringing in someone who can attract some decent recruits on his name and past record alone and who can win more games in 2021 with Pruitt’s roster than Pruitt was able to do in 2020. There is no VFL in coaching for us to appeal to so we’re gonna have to mercenary. If UTK was not as down and desperate as we are, Elliott would make a lot of sense. This place is a viper pit right now and it’s going to take someone who’s half snake charmer and the other half dragon slayer to get the job done. I don’t think any first year head coach will succeed here at this time.

No problem. We all want to win and we'd never all agree on a coach. But I really do feel better about anyone White hires than any hire we've made in a long time. Athletic direction is in his DNA.
I think Elliott is definitely a back up plan.....I think White feels guilty for hiring Heupel and not Elliott because really let’s face it, Heupel is on a down slide, he hasn’t kept it stabilized, it’s on a down slide there, so maybe the suppose call was feelers first, then maybe feeling it out on different roles he could hire him for, it’s apparent he does like Elliott but I think this is a total back up plan if I can’t get my 1,2,3 candidates type

Except Clemson doesn't really recruit that well. They have a staff who develops talent. Clemson's 5 classes leading into their utter destruction of Alabama in the NC game was 15th, 16th, 9th, 11th, 15th. It just seems like they recruit like gangbusters because they dominate virtually everyone. Their recruiting is firmly behind Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and LSU's. I read an article recently that Alabama and Georgia were tier one, Ohio State and LSU tier two, and Clemson was in a group of tier three schools recruiting wise. And that was through 2020, their last couple of recruiting classes were the best they've ever signed. Still weren't as good as Bama, OSU, Georgia and LSU but very good. Their high powered offense and great defense comes from great development and maximizing their talent. They were scoring like gangbusters and whipping people long before their best recruiting began.

I think Elliott would be a good hire. Clemson looked flat on offense when he couldn’t coach because of COVID.

Bottom line, Danny White has more than proven himself and we should trust him with this process. Especially if the admin. has closed ranks and there’s no booster interference.

You guys have so little self-awareness, it reminds me of Michael Scott.
We are a program that hasn’t been consistently good for almost 20 years. We don’t yet know what our punishment will be, and we are known for having a “toxic” environment bc of the overstepping boosters. Why would you think we’re too good for a coach like Tony Elliott???
Would I rather have Matt Campbell? Sure! But I’d also rather be taller and have more hair on my head. It just ain’t happening!
Elliott would be a great get, if we can pull this off. Frankly, I’d be surprised. He turned down Auburn for an interview.

I'm just curious. Would there be any NFL coordinators that would be interested in this job? Maybe someone like Packers OC Nathaniel Hackett.

We got 7 million get us a coach? I got a Google guy from Clemson for 2mil we can keep 5 mil same old Tennessee BS.

He’s the back up plan, white top prospect is asking more info on I guess allegations
could be correct. or Elliott may be plan A and he's asking for more info on allegations. We still may wind up with Steele as interim for the 2021 season and that would be better than making a panic hire although I suspect that is not what White was hired to do.

Elliot has been good when he has a bunch of 4 and 5*'s playing for him...Here at UT he will most likely flop in a big way and of course keep us as the laughing stock of college football....I swear to god you can't make this stuff up.

Elliott is a major reason those 4-5 stars players went to small town in SC that is called Auburn with a lake.

I understand where people are coming from with this but we heard the exact same thing about Pruitt. If they want everyone on board, they're going to have to find an experienced head coach who's had some success. Fair or not, that's just how it is.

Agreed. It’s also easy to put up large offensive numbers and look like an offensive genius when Trevor Lawrence and the rest of the 5* players are all leading the charge.
That's what I'm saying. Given our situation, we aren't going to be a team littered with 4 and 5 star players. Not for a few years anyway. No blue chip athlete is going to want to come here while we are under sanctions. We need someone who's had HC experience and who's used to having to overachieve with less talent. Elliott will not have the toys in the toy box to play with here and I'm afraid his prowess as an offensive "genius" will get exposed rather quickly.

Look if Elliot is who White wants then it is what it is. I'll get behind the hire and support him until he gives me a reason not to. But I'm not going to lie and pretend this excites me. It feels very underwhelming to me. And it SURE as hell doesn't feel like the "no stone unturned" approach we were told the AD would take to find the best candidate for our program.
