The counter argument is most of those coordinator hires were when programs were set up with a solid foundation in place to succeed. Penn St. was really the only situation where a Coordinator came in with a Program in shambles. Fulmer replaced Majors, Day replaced Meyers, Reilly followed Stoops, Jimbo followed Bowden...

Dabo has a system to win without an experienced QB. I don't know if Elliot would be able to emulate Dabo's system at TN... Dabo & Saban seem to switch QB's and OC easily without missing a beat.

His normal sources are not the people or the person in charge of hiring here. Even though he knew there was an AD announcement - he didn't know who. It's all being handled differently now and more professionally. That's not to say that a secretary that books travel reservations or Zoom calls couldn't speculate - but your friend doesn't know that Elliot is the leader. Pure speculation on his part I believe. I will buy you dinner if he is hired and won't ask you to buy mine if he isn't, because he won't be the guy imho. In this instance you are not going to bring on Pete Rose until after you have guaged the interest of Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, and Stan Musial - if you follow my analogy.

I personally want a proven head coach but I also realize reality and this may be the best we can get. I’ll trust the hire until I see a reason not to

In the end, who gives a damn what virtue signalers like Pat Forde and Dan Wolken think? The media does the same thing with sports as they do with politics. They push a certain narrative based on their personal opinions and their personal biases. People need to remember that reporters are humans with their own biases, too. Their opinion isn't the gospel...far from it. They don't have some sort of high ground pertaining to any of this. Not to mention, most sports reporters applauded the hire of Pruitt, anyway.

In the end, the main thing that matters is the character of coaches and their results. Do you hire Schiano with his baggage from Penn State and Tampa Bay and fire him in 3-4 years for lack of results, or do you take a chance on the Bama coordinator with no HC experience? Either scenario was doomed to fail, and I don't care how it ended with Pruitt, at the very least he didn't have accusations of helping cover up a scandal or accusations of treating players like garbage, and I'm glad we didn't hire him, the feelings of the precious sports reporters be damned. And not for nothing...but Schiano is also 71-73 as a college head coach. That was a bad choice from every angle, up one way and down the other.

I have mixed feelings on this. When Elliott wasnt calling plays in the OSU game I saw a big difference in Clemson. But at the same time the co offensive coordinator of Clemson last year went to South Florida in year one and went 1-8. It is really difficult to know how much credit can be attributed to individual assistants in these really successful programs so at this point it just seems like too big of a risk for UT to take.

So what IF Frost is hired and Elliott is named OC and HCIW and this whole Elliott is top target is smokescreen? I have a hard time believing White would pass him up from a smaller school to be first choice at a bigger school with trouble looming, White is not an idiot, I believe he's bringing in somebody nobody sees coming why I say Frost

Bowden had ran FSU down significantly. They wanted to fire him for years but couldn't. Oklahoma was a flaming dumpster when coordinator Stoops took over. Donnan was fired for being the latest perennially underachieving coach at Georgia, leading to Richt. Same with Dabo at Clemson.

People are acting this way about Elliott not based on his potential as a head coach but based on Pruitt sucking the life out of the program.

Either White is the AD everyone thinks and his hire will be solid, even if it's Elliott, or he doesn't know what he's doing. I'm pretty much willing to trust him to know what a good coach is and what we need in this situation. He's been solid at UCF and Buffalo in that regard.
