Today in Tennessee football history..........

December 22, 1984.........

Unfortunately, the ‘84 Sun Bowl goes down as one of the worst defeats in Vols history. After a couple of Reviez kicks, a Johnny Jones TD, and a Tim McGee td reception, UT held a 21-0 at the half. Frank Reich and Maryland stormed back to score 22 straight points to take a 1 pt lead. Pete Panuska would return a kickoff 100 yrds to give Tennessee a lead, but Maryland would score again to defeat the Vols 28-27.

On a positive note: The returning players seemed to use this loss as motivation, as we all know, '85 was a special season!

The amazing Frank Reich. He led all these comebacks: 21-0 against Vols, 31-0 against Miami, and 35-3 against Houston in the pros.

December 25, 1899.......Christmas Day!

J.A. Price was Tennessee’s first full time Head Coach. His last game of his first season was vs Grant College (now UT Chattanooga) in Chattanooga on Christmas Day. 2,500 spectators watched UT defeat Grant on a field covered in 3 inches of mud. The only score (TDs counted 5 points) was a 10 yard run by H.S. Olmstead and an extra point by Logan, giving Tennessee a 6-0 victory. Tennessee would finish the season 6-2.

Merry Christmas to all of VN!
1899 was a strong season for Tennessee and it's too bad they didn't play 7-2 Vanderbilt that season. That would have been a very good football game.

Reggie accomplished alot, in college. But, unlike most, he saved his best for the NFL. Many thought that his success would drop off, in the NFL, facing the best, every Sunday. But, Reggie always seemed to elevate his game. The better the opponent, the better Reggie played. He was, in my opinion, The Greatest defensive lineman to ever suit up. Unstoppable seems appropriate, when several Hall of Fame offensive linemen admitted that they never had an instance where they felt they had gotten the best of him.

One week after his birthday, Reggie White died at the age of 43. White succumbed to Cardiac Arrhythmia at home in North Carolina. Reggie’s football accolades are known, but his ministry and devotion to his family are what was most important to him. Reggie White was a “larger than life” man, and will go down as one of Tennessee’s beloved heroes.

December 18, 1965.......

The Vols made their first Bowl game since 1957 a memorable one. In a downpour, Dewey Warren ran for 2TDs and threw for 1TD in UT’s 27-6 victory over Tulsa in the Bluebonnet Bowl at Rice Stadium. Stan Mitchell scored the last td on an 11 yrd run. Tulsa threw for 250 yrds, but had 4 interceptions and 3 fumbles in the rain. The Vols finished 8-1-2 and ranked #7.

December 28, 1969.......

Even though the Vols lost, this season and game was a springboard to three consecutive years of great football.

The Vols traveled to Jacksonville to play Florida in the Gator Bowl. The dynamic Gator passing attack was neutralized, but the inability to score inside the 10 yrd line doomed the Vols. Lester McClain scored on a pass from Bobby Scott and Curt Watson added 121 yrds on 25 carries in the 14-13 loss.

December 28, 1957........

The 7-3 Vols played Texas A&M in the Gator Bowl, which was Bear Bryant’s last game as Aggie coach. On a rain soaked field, yards were at a premium. Bobby Gordon led the Vols with 60 yrds on 32 carries and 56 yrds passing, out performing A&M star John David Crow in the process. A collision between the two knocked Gordon out for a second, forcing him to be helped to his feet by Landon Darty. Gordon stayed in the game and held for the 17 yard field goal, made by Sammy Burklow, that gave Tennessee a 3-0 victory. It was Burklow’s only field goal attempt of the season!

On a side note, Burklow would go on to medical school in Dallas and was an intern at Parkland Hospital in 1963. He was in the emergency room when President Kennedy was rushed into the hospital.

December 29, 1986.........

After starting the season 2-5, the Vols dominated November and finished 6-5 and traveled to the Liberty Bowl to play Minnesota. After jumping out to a 14-0 lead, the Vols saw the Gophers tie the game in the 4th. Two passes to Nate Middlebrooks and Anthony Miller got the ball deep into Minnesota territory. On 3rd and 3, Jeff Francis hit Joey Clinkscales for a 15 yrd TD to put the Vols up 21-14. The defense held giving UT their third Liberty Bowl win in three tries. Jeff Francis threw for 243 yrds and 3 TDs and was named MVP.

Other than the Sugar Bowl win, over Miami, 1986 was a super disappointment. I was at the bama game, in Knoxville. Bama blew us out, 56-28. I knew after the loss to Miss State, we weren't going to live up to some lofty expectations. Auburn destroyed us, as well. I never felt like Jeff Francis lived up to the hype.

December 30, 1972........

The 9-2 #11Vols played #10 LSU in the Astro Bluebonnet Bowl in front of 53,000. Condredge Holloway was the MVP, as he rushed 19 times for 74 yrds and 2TDs, as well as throwing for 94 yrds and a 32 yrd TD pass to Jimmy Young. UT was ahead 24-3 at the half, but All-American Bert Jones brought LSU back, trailing by only 7 late in the game. On 4th down, Conrad Graham intercepted a Jones pass at the 10 yard line to preserve the 24-17 victory.

My uncle and his son were at that game. After surviving the Island Hopping Campaign of WWII, he stayed in the U. S. Marines and fought in Korea. What A Man!
Lawrence Buckles was such a devout fan that he got a little over-charged during that incredible first half and had to be rushed to the hospital there in Houston. Heart Attack. He regained consciousness and ask, "Son, did we win?" "Yes dad, we won." And he was gone.
The University Of Tennessee Athletic Department sent flowers, as I recall, some arrangement in the shape of a football field.
Bittersweet memories.

Wow. This thread has brought back some great memories.

December 31, 1966.......

The 7-3 Vols were invited to play the 8-2 Syracuse Orangemen in the Gator Bowl. The Orangemen had one of the best rushing attacks in the country with Floyd Little and Larry Csonka. Syracuse had 348 yrds vs the Vols, but 4 turnovers (3 interceptions on 7 passes) helped keep them out of the end zone for the first half. Dewey Warren had two TD passes in the first half and led UT to an 18-0 lead. Warren finished with 244 yrds passing. Two touchdowns by Syracuse in the second half weren’t enough, as the Vols held on to win 18-12.

And just look at some of those names! Warren, Emanuel, Wantland, Fulton, Widby ...

A collection of Vol Legends.

Possibly the most versatile athlete in Vol History, Ron Widby played basketball and was named a 2nd Team All American and SEC Player of the Year in 1966-67. In football he led the nation in punting during the 1966 season and topped off the '66-'67 year by lettering in golf. He also played baseball in 1965 and hit .300 for the Vols he wasn't all that interested (!) in baseball and quit the team to concentrate on basketball and football. He was drafted in 1967 by the New Orleans Saints, the Chicago Bulls and the New Orleans Buccaneers of the ABA. Cut by the Saints he played a season with the Buccaneers before signing with the Dallas Cowboys where he stayed for the next 5 seasons before being traded to Green Bay where he played for two seasons.

One would think that if UT had a Tiddlywinks team, he'd have dominated in that as well.

January 1, 1990.........

From 1989-2007 seasons, the Vols only missed a New Year’s Day/ January Bowl six times. It was hard to pick just one Jan. 1 game, so I went with the one that got it all started.
Coming off a 5-6 season, the ‘89 Vols started the season unranked, but would finish the regular season as Co-SEC Champions, ranked #8, and playing Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl.
The Vols had two long touchdowns; an 84 yrd reception by Anthony Morgan and a 78 yrd run by Chuck Webb; that helped build a 31-13 lead going into the 4th quarter. Two touchdowns by the Razorbacks cut the lead to four, but Alvin Harper recovered an onside kick to preserve the 31-27 victory. MVP Chuck Webb ran 26 times for 250 yrds and 2TDs and Carl Pickens was named defensive MVP.
The Vols finished #5 in the country.
